Hello, I was just wondering if anyone had any copies of First North Western timetables 2, 11 and 15 knocking around somewhere? I need these three as they are the only ones that I am missing (I've farmed the rest from the Wayback Machine).

For reference, 2 was Manchester to Preston and Blackpool, 11 was Liverpool to Blackpool, Bolton, and Manchester Victoria and Preston to Ormskirk, and 15 was Manchester to Rochdale.

If anyone can help I would be very appreciative. :D

Sorry can't help but I'm interested in the search criteria that you used with Wayback Machine. I tried searching using words such as 'british rail timetable 1970' and 'western region timetable 1970' but didn't get anything useful.

To use Wayback Machine you need to type in the specifc URL of the site (or former site) you're looking for, and it'll give you results. It doesn't quite work like Google, for example.

Thanks for the link but I was looking for any data going back to the 1970s/80s - well before the Internet. I have some old timetables from this period (& the 1960s) and wondered if someone had scanned others and stored them somewhere on the web.

www.timetableworld.com has some.
You may also find some accessible via specialist forums

If paper timetable books are of any interest, you can often find a few on ebay.uk, searching for "british railway timetables".
Prices vary - some I would consider "reasonable", but others seem grossly over-priced to me.

As I can vouch for, but sometimes one gets a real bargain.

Thanks. I have tried there but it didn't have anything that I was looking for.

I have a few timetables spanning the late 1970s to 1990s covering GB and Ireland. I can probably scan a few individual tables and PM them if there's anything you are particularly looking for route-wise?

Many thanks for your offer. One of my railway interests is the transition of long distance summer Saturday only holiday services from the late 1950s until their virtual demise at the end of the 1980s, particularly those to/from the West Country. Early casualties included through services between Paddington and St Ives; Perranporth & Kingsbridge. Later ones included those to/from Minehead and Ilfracombe/Barnstaple. Eg. When did the Barnstaple – Paddington/Waterloo cease?

I have most summer timetables for 1960 and quite a few summer LMR timetables (which incorporate cross country services to/from the SW) mainly in the 1960/70s and also 3 BR timetables – 1982/4 & 1998. Also, I have downloaded timetables covering the SW main lines from 2008. That leaves me with gaps in the 1970/80s. I don’t want to bother you much but I would be interested in filling in my understanding of the evolution of holiday services in the pre-privatisation era.

I have the May 77-78 timetable in front of me. Table 51 gives you most of what you want.
I've also got some later ones tucked away as well as some 60s WR, LMR and ER ones which might be of interest. Not sure what dates these are without looking.
I can scan things or look up specific lines if that helps

Thanks. I have quite a few cross country timetables (Table 51 or summer weekend equivalent leaflets) from the 60s onwards but I have nothing for WR services between the SW and Wales/Paddington/Waterloo from 1960 till 1982.

Through services Waterloo to Ilfracombe, Torrington, Bude and Padstow ceased in Sept. 1964. Alternatives on Summer Saturdays only were:-

Paddington to Bude (1965 season only).
Paddington to Ilfracombe (to 1970 season - Ilfracombe closed Oct 1970.)
Paddington to Barnstaple Jcn (1971 - 1980 seasons).

Paddington to Minehead ran to 1970 season - Minehead closed Jan 1971.

I remember a Summer Saturday Oxford - Minehead service but don't remember the dates. Will the decline in paper timetables (for rail and bus) make research for future historians much more difficult? The Omnibus Society library in Walsall has a large timetable collection but what's the equivalent for rail?

Doesn't the NRM have an archive with a collection of timetables within that?

Thanks for that info.
My May 1982 public T/T shows a summer SO 08.35 from Barnstaple to Waterloo. No mention of a corresponding return service. It seems an anomaly, especially going back to using Waterloo rather than Paddington. I wonder if also ran in 1981 and 1983 as it wasn't in the 1984 T/T.

Can't answer that, as I've not kept every timetable, but it's quite likely. It used the set which would otherwise have started its Waterloo diagram at Exeter.
