This sums up the stupidity of the Welsh rules quite well (from politics for all on twitter):

| NEW: In Wales - due to new Covid rules - 50 fans attended a Welsh rugby match outside — but 140 people watched it indoors from the clubhouse on Boxing Day

It is common with hardline socialists.

In East Germany if you wanted to drive to the coast for the day you had to apply and get permission from the local party, a bit like applying for a possession on the railway.

Though to be fair, quite a few from the right have taken a hardline approach.

Gove has already been mentioned, and then of course there was Priti Patel, well known hard-Brexiteer, anti-immigrationist, and very much from the economic right (one of the Britannia Unchained 'all British workers are lazy scroungers' brigade). It was her, if I remember right, who encouraged people to snitch on their neighbours if they met in groups larger than 6.

I think it's more libertarian-authoritarian than left-right.

Yes you probably have a point.

Its more of a problem with the left than the right though because on the right the Conservative and Liberal Unionist and National Liberal Party has authoritarians and libertarians all in the same party (see backbench rebellion over restrictions a week or so back and orange book liberals such as Liz Truss)

Wheras on the left the authoritarians are in one strong party (Labour) wheras the libertarians are in a very weak one (Lib Dems) that also has some members with questionable attitudes due to importing a slew of the Labour party in the 1980s.

The old "scientists" at it again...

"The Technical Advisory Cell (TAC) - which looks at data and models how different restrictions would work - said Alert Level Four (full lockdown) measures for two weeks from December 27 would be the best way forward saying: "The introduction of alert levels below Alert Level Four would have some dampening effect, but this may not be sufficient to prevent material harm to NHS and care services.

It said that modelling scenarios showed that there was a high likelihood of a period in early 2022 of "critical pressure" on the NHS, social care and society comparable to or higher than what was experienced last year, driven by a significant wave of Omicron infections."

All music to Drakeford's ears, of course.

If a full lockdown, the toughest possible measures, isn’t “sufficient”, then pray tell what would be!

But even Dripford hasn't introduced a full lockdown in Wales from December 27th, presumably because nasty old Boris won't get his cheque book out and subsidise his (Dripford's) locktivist fantasies.

And what is supposed to happen after the two week lockdown?

It would be at least two weeks before the effect of the lockdown feeds through to cases, and another two weeks before the lockdown affects hospitalisations.

Sounds as though the "Technical Advisory Cell" (who the hell are they?) want a lockdown to be imposed so that they can claim the credit for the figures coming down, whereas all the current trends suggest that the figures will start to fall in a few weeks anyway.

Yes, quite.

In his effort to wield the devolutionary stick of power, it would seem that, ironically, Drakeford has achieved nothing but considerable harm to the devolutionary cause, when many in Wales look enviously to the more level-headed approach shown by Boris.

So far, anyway.

Or, to look at it another way, the NHS and social care still don't have the capacity they need to have to cope with the expected demand.

At least two pubs in Newport have decided not open today. I imagine that would be considered a minor success by some.

The ban on crowds in Wales is to continue despite Drakeford admitting Omicron is not as severe as they feared.
Utterly ridiculous but what can we expect from the idiot?
So tomorrow Bristol Bears women are getting my money and the following week Dings Crusaders will be.
Welsh sports fans are an easy target for Drakeford I am afraid.

My regular pub has put tables next to the bar so you can be served in conventional fashion but seated on a chair instead of a barstool or standing. Lifting your full glass down from head height without spillage takes a little practice but most of us have mastered it now.

But..but… what if a pint glass fell on someone’s head and broke causing cuts. More strain on the NHS!

I see that Drakeford has given a press briefing and has been spouting that England is "politically paralysed" in respect of implementing coronavirus restrictions and has condemned Prime Minister Johnson and the Westminster Government for neglecting to take action to "protect its population" from coronavirus by imposing further restrictions.

If you want to be locked down sooner or later vote Labour.

I do wonder if there's a subset of the population that has developed some sort of "sadistic" attitude towards restrictions.

Chester City FC is having fun:

The ground is in Wales but the entrance, car park and access to the ground is in England!

And match day policing is provided by Cheshire Constabulary. So ultimately, who has jurisdiction? Could be a very interesting court case, IF it ever gets that far. I could see this possibly being kicked into the long grass and forgotten about. Then again…

It really is utterly pathetic and would have thought the time and energy wasted on this could be put to better use? But then there is Dripford........

Very, very childish by the local council/Welsh Govt.
Was at one of those matches.
The car park, ticket offices and bar/reception areas are in England with the rest of the ground on the border or just in Wales.
Policed by Cheshire constabulary.
Didn't see a single 'Welcome to Wales' sign lol

Proof that some people are now using the pandemic to play politics.

Agreed. If Drakeford and his little government want to continue being arses dictatorial about it then Chester could ask Tranmere about playing at Prenton Park instead :D

And that comment gives me no hope of the current restrictions being lifted anytime soon.

Their next home game should be interesting now Drakeford is on the case.

The situation with Chester FC just goes to show how utterly ridiculous the situation is in Wales right now. Yes technically the ground is in Wales, but it is practically impossible to go further into Wales without crossing back into England, unless you cross a bunch of fields and swim a river. So crowds gathering at the Deva Stadium will have no impact on the rest of the country. Utter, utter nonsense from the Welsh authorities.

There has always been a loud minority whom it suits that there be restrictions on other people having fun. Because "the virus hasn't gone away, you know".

Do you mean masochistic?
Or just don't like going to work.
Or if you get time off with full pay while suffering from an asymptomatic or mild illness what's not to like? In fact why get vaccinated and reduce your chances of some additional paid leave?
