What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Unsure if this is the thread or not, but can somebody clarify exactly if the former Anglia 170s are in Wales, or are/have gone to East Midlands yet?

I have seen it mentioned that the 170s may go to East Midlands at some point - unsure if that is the case or if it is a rumour/suggestion.

273 has gone, the rest will go at some point before the end of the year.

273 has gone to EMR but the rest are still with TfW I believe.

273 has gone on lease but the others will go when the Mark 4s enter service, probably December 2022, and the possibility of some more 153s arriving and some 197s have entered service. Difficult to put a time to it.

Other sources suggest they'll be gone by December this year.

Extract from Railway Gazette June 2021:=

TfW’s fleet of 12 Class 170 DMUs, transferred from Greater Anglia in 2019-20, will now be sub-leased to East Midlands Railway until the end of that operator’s contract in what is expected to be a permanent move. Their release is being made possible by the acquisition of additional Mk IV loco-hauled sets from Arriva’s Grand Central business, changes in the deployment plan for the new CAF Class 197 fleet, and the purchase of eight Class 153 single-car DMUs which are to be refurbished with full TSI PRM accessibility modifications for use on the Swansea – Shrewsbury Heart of Wales line. Meanwhile, the incoming Class 197s will be used on routes in west Wales previously expected to be covered by the Class 170 sets.

All these hopefuls won't be in service by December 2021 but wait and see

Do EMR need the 170s to increase services or just to replace 15x? If the latter, could TfW get even more cascaded 153s (or possibly 158s if all EMR's 153s are already gone - does staff competency on TfW's 158s carry over to non-ETCS-fitted units or would retraining be required?) as a short-term measure if EMR want the 170s before TfW could otherwise release them?

Unlikely any further swaps will take place this year or next year. The additional mk4s should enter service roughly the same time as the 197s, with the Flirts being not far behind.
By that time TfW stock will be moved around the network wherever fits best and the 170s can go.

Many thanks.

For information, it is 170204, 207, 272, and 273 I require for haulage of the former Anglia 170s.

273 has gone to help make up for delay in cascade of 170s from WMT which are for 15x replacement. The remaining 170s will be going in place of the 171s originally penciled in for covering service increases.

I have often wondered if the EMR 158s have ever come into the equation - as a fleet they make a lot more sense with TfW than the 170s ever did. And the answer to your question is yes - staff competency does carry over. A GWR 158 ended up on loan to the then ATW a few years ago when it was otherwise unneeded owing to a blockade of the Severn Tunnel. It's probably no worse then trying to find the controls in the four different versions of 153s we have running around at present.

Again though - who knows what will actually happen. Watch this space.

Yes it is definitely done and back in service.
158832 is the next 158 for its internal refresh
Any idea which Class 150 is being refurbed currently?

Also, when do the Class 158s usually swap over?

Cant say for sure but 255 hasnt been out for a while. Not anywhere close to certain though, most 150s are out each day and that one hasnt been though.

158s usually take about 3-4 weeks, dont think 826 is out yet but 832 is at Crewe now waiting to go in so it cant be far off

Can anyone update us on the Class 150 and Class 153 progress please?

Can anyone confirm if 150 255, 153 910 and 153 922 completed their stints in the works, and what has replaced them?

Also to note that 175 106 has now replaced 175 107 at Widnes for refurbishment.

158 832 is in works at Crewe.

Northern are waiting on 15 x 156 from EMR who are waiting 170’s from TfW who are waiting on 197 / Mk4 / 153’s. These will replace the 153’s (over which only 4 are diagrammed) but I’m not clear if they will also replace the 155’s.

Could TfW requirement for 8 x 153 be met by Northern’s compliant 7 x 155 ?
