solution to Friday 16 November

Monday 18 November

This game is called "south circular"

The network south of London looks like spaghetti on the map but really its quite simple

From Victoria Southern operate the following trains every hour (off-peak, Dec 2012 timetable)

CYP route

xx06 SUO via CYP
xx19 LBG via CYP
xx36 SUO via CYP
xx49 LBG via CYP

NRB route

xx03 SUO via NRB
xx13 CAT via NRB
xx23 EPD via NRB
xx33 SUO via NRB
xx43 CAT via NRB
xx53 EPS via NRB

HCB route

xx01 HRH via EPS
xx17 EPS via HCB
xx31 DKG via EPS
xx47 EPS via HCB

Gatwick Express

xx00 GTW Express
xx15 GTW Express
xx30 GTW Express
xx45 GTW Express

Other Main Line

xx02 PMH and BOG
xx06 BTN Express
xx17 LIT and EBN
xx23 EGR
xx32 SOU and BOG
xx36 BTN Express
xx47 ORE and LIT
xx51 BTN
xx53 EGR

Total 27

Questions

How many trains can you catch to GTW?
How many trains stop at ECR?
How many trains stop at CLJ?

Stopping at GTW (Gatwick Airport) are: xx00 GatEx, xx02 PMH and BOG (Portsmouth Harbour and Bognor Regis), xx15 GatEx, xx17 LIT and EBN (Littlehampton and Eastbourne), xx30 GatEx, xx32 SOU and BOG (Southampton Central and Bognor Regis), xx45 GatEx, xx47 ORE and LIT (Ore and Littlehampton) and xx51 BTN (Brighton).

Stopping at ECR (East Croydon) are: xx13 and xx43 CAT via NRB (Caterham via Norbury) and all "Other Main Line" services.

Stopping at CLJ (Clapham Junction) are: All except GatEx services and xx51 BTN.

well done Robinson perfect answer

thats 9 trains per hour VIC GTW, 11 trains per hour VIC ECR and 22 trains per hour VIC CLJ

Tuesday 20 November

Here's London Bridge (Southern trains only)

FOH

xx06 CAT via FOH
xx22 VIC via FOH
xx36 CAT via FOH
xx52 VIC via FOH

TUH

xx10 WCY via TUH
xx25 BKJ via TUH
xx40 WCY via TUH
xx55 BKJ via TUH

FAST LINE

xx03 HRH via RDH
xx08 UCK via OXT
xx15 REI via RDH
xx33 HRH via RDH
xx45 TON via RDH

Total 13 trains

So if we count London Bridge and Victoria together
there are

(13 + 27 - 2) x 2 = 76 trains (in both directions) every hour

Now its your turn:

what other trains are there that don't start or terminate at LBG or VIC?

Coastway West from BTN:

xx03 PMH (Portsmouth Harbour)
xx14 HOV (Hove)
xx23 WWO (West Worthing)
xx33 SOU (Southampton Central)
xx44 HOV
xx53 WWO

Coastway East from BTN:

xx10 SEF (Seaford)
xx22 LWS (Lewes)
xx32 AFK (Ashford International)
xx40 SEF
xx52 ORE (Ore)

Coastway West from LIT (Littlehampton):

xx11 BOG (Bognor Regis)
xx54 PMS (Portsmouth & Southsea)

Coastway West from BAA (Barnham):
xx52 BOG

West London Line from SCY (South Croydon):
xx07 MKC (Milton Keynes Central)

PUR (Purley) xx02 - TAT (Tattenham Corner)

Actually, speaking of TAT, where are the LBG - TAT services in your analysis above? :p

Thanks Robinson i forgot the London Bridge Tattenham Corner trains so here is London Bridge corrected

Tuesday 20 November

Here's London Bridge (Southern trains only)

FOH

xx06 CAT via FOH
xx22 VIC via FOH
xx36 CAT via FOH
xx52 VIC via FOH

TUH

xx10 WCY via TUH
xx25 BKJ via TUH
xx40 WCY via TUH
xx55 BKJ via TUH

FAST LINE

xx03 HRH via RDH
xx08 UCK via OXT
xx15 REI via RDH
xx20 TAT via PUR
xx33 HRH via RDH
xx45 TON via RDH
xx50 TAT via PUR

Total 15 trains

So if we count London Bridge and Victoria together
there are

(15 + 27 - 2) x 2 = 80 trains (in both directions) every hour

Adding in the non-London trains we get:

Brighton - West Coastway 6
Brighton - East Coastway 5
Other - 5

Total 16
Total both directions 32

So Southern operates 80+32=112 trains in a "standard hour" of which 80 start or finish at Victoria or London Bridge

Wednesday 21 November

Based on Monday's and Tuesday's exploration of the services operated by Southern here are a few questions

1) Which station has the most Southern departures in the standard hour we have been looking at and how many is that ?

2) Which station has the most frequent Southern service from Brighton and how many trains is
that ?

3) Which of the following stations have the most Southern trains from Brighton in the standard hour and how many trains is that ?

HHE
TBD
GTW
RDH

4) Which station has the most frequent Southern service from London Bridge and how many trains is that ?

5) In the next franchise Southern will be combined with Thameslink

In the current timetable how many trains per hour would that franchise operate per hour between London and Gatwick Airport ?

We'll leave these questions up until Sunday...

Here is a correct solution to the questions. These don't seem to have attracted much interest - perhaps too focussed on Southern. Sorry about that:

1) Which station has the most Southern departures (in the standard hour we have been looking at) and how many is that ?

CLJ
2 BTN (one train stops up direction only)
2 Coastway
2 Arun Valley
2 EGR
4 via SRH
7 via NRB (including one from MKC)
4 via HCB
1 West London Line
23 VIC
47 total

2) Which station has the most frequent Southern service from Brighton
and how many trains is that ?

HOV
6 trains

3) Which of the following stations have the most Southern trains from Brighton in the standard hour and how many trains is that ?

1 per hour to GTW

4) Which stations have the most frequent Southern service from Eastbourne
and how many trains is that ?

4 HMD, PLG & LWS

5) In the next franchise Southern will be combined with Thameslink

In the current timetable how many trains per hour would that franchise operate per hour between London and Gatwick Airport ?

VIC
4 Gatwick Express
1 BTN
2 Coastway
2 Arun Valley

LBG (Southern)
2 HRH

LBG (Thameslink)
4 BTN

Not sure I get what I'm supposed to do on this one; I reckon I know what station you're at and deduce the service group you've outlined...

Worth noting too that the aforementioned services which call CLJ (Clapham Junction) are pick-up only (outbound)/set-down only (inbound).

Thank you gnolife almost perfect except the xx42 stops at HOK (Hook)

WEDNESDAY 28 NOVEMBER

This game is called “boomerang”

Below is a list of trains from WAT in an off-peak hour (after 10 December 2012) that take the route via Putney

There are 12 trains in all and what is unusual is that 6 of them are shown as going from WAT to WAT – that’s because these trains operate in a continuous loop and end up back where they started. There are two loops – some trains go outwards via RMD and back via HOU or go out via HOU and return via RMD, while others go out via RMD and return via KNG and WIM (or go out via WIM and KNG and return via RMD). There are a few questions below to see if you’ve got it!

xx03 WAT to WAT via RMD,KNG,WIM
xx07 WAT to WAT via HOU,RMD
xx15 WAT to WAT via RMD,HOU
xx20 WAT to RDG via RMD
xx22 WAT to WYB via HOU
xx28 WAT to WNR via RMD
xx33 WAT to WAT via RMD,KNG,WIM
xx37 WAT to WAT via HOU,RMD
xx45 WAT to WAT via RMD,HOU
xx50 WAT to RDG via RMD
xx52 WAT to WYB via HOU
xx58 WAT to WNR via RMD

1) Which of the above trains call at BNI before CHK?
2) Which of the above trains call at ISL before SYL?
3) Which of the above trains call at SMG before TWI?
4) Which of the above trains call at NSH before MTL?
5) Which of the above trains don’t call at PUT?

This is a summary of trains from WAT:

Main slow line 16 trains per hour.
Main fast line 14 trains per hour.
All trains via PUT 12 trains per hour.
Total trains from WAT 42 per hour.
Total in both directions (42 - 4) x 2 = 76
We take out 4 to avoid counting the loop trains twice
As a comparison SN (including GX) run 80 trains per hour to/from VIC and LBG

Finally can you think of any trains operated by SW that don’t start or finish at WAT?

1) xx07 and xx37 to WAT (London Waterloo) via HOU (Hounslow) and RMD (Richmond); xx22 and xx52 to WYB (Weybridge) via HOU.

2) xx15 and xx45 to WAT via RMD and HOU.

3) xx03 and xx33 to WAT via RMD, KNG (Kingston) and WIM (Wimbledon); xx15 and xx45 to WAT via RMD and HOU.

4) xx07 and xx37 to WAT via HOU and RMD; also 2 not on the list are xx27 and xx57 to WAT via WIM, KNG and RMD.

5) xx20 and xx50 to RDG (Reading).

SWT services which don't start/finish at WAT:

xx56 SAL (Salisbury) to ROM (Romsey) via ROM, SOU (Southampton Central) and ESL (Eastleigh); xx07 ROM to SAL.

xx12 and xx42 BCU (Brockenhurst) to LYP (Lymington Pier); xx27 and xx57 LYP to BCU.

xx44 SOU to PMS (Portsmouth & Southsea); xx38 PMS to SOU.

xx23 and xx53 ACT (Ascot) to GLD (Guildford) via AHT (Aldershot); xx00 and xx30 GLD to ACT.

Well done another perfect solution

I don't think you'll struggle too much with the next one

THURSDAY 29 NOVEMBER

Summary of what we have learned so far

Southern

Victoria 27 departures per hour
London Bridge departures per hour 15
Total trains per hour 112
To/from London 80
Non-London 32

South West Trains

Waterloo 42
Total trains per hour 88*
To/from London 76
Non-London 12

* London (42 - 4) x 2
Adjusting for loop trains
Non-London 6 x 2

So SWT operates quite a lot less trains than Southern and is much more concentrated on London despite only having one London terminus

Anyway some questions:

Here is a list of stations

Please indicate whether they have off-peak services from
LBG, VIC or WAT

1) AHT
2) AHD
3) BAL
4) CLJ
5) DKG
6) FTN
7) HRH
8) SNW
9) SOU
10) WCY
