So the target for 2024 is 36 different classes then? :D

January 2024

Five days out:
- One West Midlands Day Ranger (to cover the curve from the Camp Hill line round to Selly Oak and score some units and shacks)
- One out and back to Ellesmere Port for a quiz (sampled my first 777s, ugh)
- Three out Tuesday/back Wednesday trips to London (for quizzes). Feltham Travelodge is not only cheapish, near the station and near the only Wetherspoons in the known universe where the chef can cook bacon properly, it's also 12 minutes by bus from Hatton Cross so accessible during rail strikes.

37 "winners" for the month, plus four new shacks visited. Oakengates and Albrighton are pleasant enough old-school local stations; Cheddington is busy but windswept; Telford Central is marred by an unnecessarily high footbridge.

Only one loco sampled - dud 68008 took me competently but noisily from Marylebone to Solihull (splitting tickets at Wolverhampton and going thence to London "via High Wycombe" is cheaper than Avanti and avoids the hellhole which is Euston - useful information if anyone else in the Tropic of Rochdale is daft enough to do quizzes in London!)

Mileage for January 1,776 miles and 9 chains...

No actual pure "railway" trips this month, but three more midweek visits to Feltham/London for quizzes, plus one to Hoylake for a similar purpose.

58 "winners" (including LU part sets), two new shacks (Berkhamsted and Tring) and one loco sampled (67010, twice, from Crewe to Manchester).

First units of classes 701 and 730 sampled.

1527m 5ch travelled in February, so yearly total now 3303m 14ch

Not the busiest month for you, at least you got some winners out of it mind :)
Was very lucky with 450s this week, with three required ones on Windsor Lines departures from Waterloo within an hour on Tuesday afternoon, and 009 picked up late at night on the 23:52 to Hounslow as far as Clapham Jc. Now down to my last 13 for haulage/rideage, including 450124 which I've never even seen o_O (I presume it does actually exist), plus two 458s (516/533, which I presume are OOS for shortening!)

First winning Locos of the year should be in a few days time on the Cwm & Glo Railtour - I've managed to avoid the entire DB fleet for the last 25 years, but this should change on 09/03!

South Welsh Freighty Bits, London and some randomly gratuitous Shackery and Unit-Hoovering

Here are the raw details of the six days copied from my spreadsheet of "moves". New haulages/rideages (including self propelled units which form part of the train - my rules) are in red, new shacks asterisked*.

Of the new shacks visited, Tame Bridge Parkway is a dull, cheap, scruffy place; Duddeston is OK, with nice views; Barnt Green is perfectly competent and does its job; Bromsgrove is well designed, as is Brent Cross West; Andover is a pleasant, old school station but Mrs Ascher's shop was nowhere to be seen (Agatha Christie fans will understand this); Hook and Fleet are both typical commuter stations which do their job.

Saturday's main event was the Cwm and Glo Railtour, which did what it said it would in a competent manner. The Uskmouth and Cwmbargoed branches were duly ticked off (OK, not right to the very end in either case, but it'll do for me), as was Costa Coffee in Bridgend during a welcome break from sitting on the train, and a couple of 66s scored.

There was a nice bonus on Tuesday when I firstly picked up 444017, both for haulage and as my last one of the class for sight. This was a planned thing, but subsequently doing the same thing with 450124 definitely wasn't - I realised I was later than planned heading into London so planned to use the faster Vauxhall/Victoria/Bakerloo Line route to get to the Harley St area, but the train I was on didn't stop at Vauxhall, so bailed out at Clapham Jc for the first one that did and got very, very lucky...

Duddeston is one of those stations I wouldn't want to hang around when it gets dark. It gives that sort of impression that it gets used by the local youths to hang out smoking various things.

Hope the tour was worth the ching :)

I will eventually get back to the trip reports, but have got distracted by the "overnights" thread on the forum.

An ALR visiting Acklington, Oulton Broad North, Falmouth Town, Carbis Bay, Thurso, Reston, Annan, Arisaig, Hawarden, Gwersyllt, Ninian Park and Johnston to tick off my most Northerly, Southerly, Easterly and Westerly "required shacks" (plus Dunnet Head and John O'Groats whilst in in the vicinity) seems to fit the bill for something different.

A perusal of RTT seems in order ;)
