There was a rail connection across Rochdale Road in Manchester from the former L & Y Oldham Road goods depot that was used to convey what I think were coke wagons to and from Rochdale Road gas works, which had its main entrance in Gould Street.
As a young boy, in the early 1950's, I remember seeing the traffic halted on Rochdale Road and a tank engine, protected by two men with red flags, one either side of the engine, go in and out of the gas works. It may have been an industrial locomotive owned by the gas works, but I am not sure if it was.
Has anyone on the forum any historical information as to when this rail service first started and the date that it finished. Also any information as to the type of engines used.
