Rubber Signals

Am I correct in the belief that some ground sigals had rubber discs due to tight clearances and overhangs?
Ely Springs to mind for some reason.

There were some at Cambridge - put in as part of the LNER 1920s resignalling - shunting ground signals with miniature (rubber) arms (not discs). My memory is that it was as much for staff safety (they could bang their lags against them without damage) as anything
