Thought promotion/relegation still on the cards. Bottom team in Super League goes down. Points percentage to be used if not all games played.

Winning team via RL Championship play offs (i.e. the so-called "Million Pound game") comes up.

After two quite good Super League years, the new season has seen Salford Red Devils with a very big problem with a new hand at the helm and the team in the process of rebuilding. The three Super League results this season to date are:-
Away to St Helens...............Lost 6 - 29
Home to Hull F C.................Lost 4 - 35
Away to Catalans Dragons .. Lost 6 - 42.

Another change for the 2021-2022 season in that in League 1, North Wales Crusaders will relocate their home ground fixtures from Wrexham to a stadium in Colwyn Bay, on account of Covid-19 regulations.

Castleford Tigers 18 ... Salford Red Devils 70

A somewhat strange match in a season where Covid-19 related matters had disrupted the fixture list. Castleford chose to bring in some of their younger players, whilst Salford were hit by suspensions still needing to be served. The first half was well fought, but Salford led 22-6 at half time, but the second half saw the more experienced Salford team really applying far greater pressure which saw them score 48 points. Salford won the try count by 11 to 3 and moved out of the bottom two places.

Try count was actually 12 - 3 and this was apparently Salford's record ever points tally in their 23 (of a possible 26) seasons thus far in Super League.

Castleford understood to have rested a number of their more regular players ahead of Saturday's upcoming Challenge Cup Final v St. Helens.

Thanks for the correction to the try total of Salford....it is not often you lose count of the number of tries they score in a game....

Hull derby called off again due to covid I await the announcement from the RFL that promotion and relegation has been scrapped for this season due to covid and I'm not confident the World Cup will take place due to covid cases on the rise in Australia

I see that West Wales Raiders are now just referred to as Raiders in their league table, but they still have no points yet this season.
I looked this morning at the BBC League 1 league table and they are now shown as West Wales Raiders. Despite their celebrity signing at the start of the season, they still find League 1 "a bridge too far" with the following statistics:-

P.11 ..... W.0 D.0 L.11 ..... Points for. 152 ... Points against. 560 ..... League points. 0

I don't know who West Wales Raiders played since that last posting I made, but they must have drawn a match and now have one league point!!!

Huddersfield came into this Friday night away match unbeaten in their three previous league matches and at half time, were leading by the narrow margin of 8-6, but the old adage of "it's tries that win matches" certainly rang true, as by the end of the game, Salford had won the try count 3 to 1 and registered a much needed win.

Raiders had a 24-24 home draw with Doncaster last Saturday. And very nearly registered what would have been only their 2nd win as a semi-pro club, apparently,

Not surprisingly, it was Leigh Centurions who were the team to be relegated from the Super League. Is the difference between the top two divisions in Rugby League in terms of financial and professional affairs becoming more akin to the Premier League and the Championship in football?

As I understand it Leigh where working with a smaller budget than most superleague clubs I'm not even sure they had a equal if any share of the money from broadcasting rights.Superleague clubs still want to look after their own .The chief executive of superleague resigned Robert Elstone after he was brought in to find additional funding for superleague. The clubs rejected his proposals and he tended his resignation.

A new league season now commences with new players at many of the teams in Super League. Salford now have a new coach at the helm, but a first match away at Castleford was going to be a test of their mettle. Whilst both teams scored three tries, it was the goalkicking ability of Salford when penalties were awarded that won the day for Salford.

@Xenophon PCDGS. Agreed. The re-signing of the reliable goal kicker Marc Sneyd by the Salford RL club looks like it will prove to be a smart piece of business. Can make all the difference when there's only a few points separating the competing teams in the closing stages of a game. Sneyd successfully kicked all three conversions as well four penalties last night.

Salford Red Devils 38 ... Toulouse Olympique 12

Newly promoted Toulouse must have wondered if the atrocious weather was something to cope with as well as a well-coordinated Salford team and Salford led 20-6 at half time. A second-half was more of the same and Salford ran out easy runners. Of the seven tries scored by Salford, Ken Sio scored four of them.

After four matches, it is not surprising to see who the bottom two teams are in this league:-

Cornwall................................P4 W0 D0 L4 F74 A222 Pts 0

West Wales Raiders.................P4 W0 D0 L4 F20 A282 Pts 0

Be an interesting occasion when they play each other.

Betfred Super League

Salford Red Devils 74 ... Wakefield Trinity 10

Wakefield came into this match full of confidence after consecutive wins over Hull FC and Warrington Wolves and scored an early try, then Salford came really into the match and were 32-6 up at half-time. Salford kept up the pressure in the second half and won convincingly. They won the try count 13 to 2.

Betfred League 1

West Wales Raiders 4 ... Cornwall 24

Cornwall avenged their home defeat by the Raiders in mid-May and did so in Wales by a good score this weekend,

Betfred Super League.....Match played on 3rd July 2022

Warrington Wolves 24 ... Salford Red Devils 32

Warrington find themselves in a part of the league table they are not used to and in this local derby match, they met Salford who have recently put in good performances. The first half was even with Salford then conceding two tries before half time and a further two tries at the start of the second half which put Warrington 24-8 in the lead, but then Salford ran in five tries before the end.

Betfred Super League ... Match played on Sunday, 17th July 2022

Salford Red Devils 32 ... Catalans Dragons 6

Salford have not got a good record against the Dragons and the Dragons were expected to keep a top three league place after this match, which was played in summer weather of the type usually found in the Catalan region. The first half was well fought by both teams and Salford led 12-6 at half time, but then Salford had to defend strongly in the second half against strong Dragon's pressure, but also took the opportunity to attack. In the end, Salford won the try count 5 to 1, with Ken Sio scoring a hat-trick. This result keep the Salford league position improvement consolidated.

Betfred Super League ... Match played on Saturday, 23rd July 2022

Toulouse Olympique 11 ... Salford Red Devils 24

Another Salford match against the overseas teams in a week and Toulouse had won their three previous matches and had home advantage. Toulouse shaded the first half and were 9-6 at half-time, but Salford are also on a good run of form and their pressure told in the second half. Joe Burgess scored two tries as did Ken Sio (to add to the three he scored against Catalan Dragons last Sunday). Salford are now in 6th position.

Salford Red Devils 44 ... St Helens 12

In the first half, Salford really pressurised table-topping St Helens to the tune of being 26-0 up at half time and still kept up disrupting the St Helens game plan in the second half to record a most unexpected final result. Salford won the try count 8-2 and remain in 6th place in the league.

Salford are continuing to show how much they have improved as the season progresses and an away fixture at fourth-place Catalans Dragons was a mark of this and Salford led 18-8 at half-time, but they really moved up a gear in the second half, running out worthy winners by the end of the match. Salford won the try count easily, again scoring eight tries as they did in their last match against St Helens. Salford still remain in 6th place in the league.

Castleford Tigers 10 ... Salford Red Devils 50.

After the home win against Hull FC last Thursday 28-18, the Bank Holiday Monday match away to Castleford Tigers who were also vying for a top six spot was another match to test Salford, but they started very strongly scoring two early tries and although Castleford finished the first half strongly, Salford led 20-10 at half time. In the second half, Salford ran riot scoring a further 30 points and not conceding any. Salford won the try count 8 to 2 and moved up to fifth place in the league.

More importantly for Salford, it effectively guarantees a place in the end-of-season play-offs, and so extends their 2022 Super League campaign beyond next weekend (when the final fixtures of the regular season are all scheduled).

At the start of the year, most Red Devils' supporters would have been quite happy just to have seen their team win a few key games and avoid relegation.

In the eliminators to decide which of the teams that finished in the league places of third to sixth would proceed to the semi-finals, in both matches, the lower placed league team beat higher placed opposition.

Catalan Dragons 10 ... Leeds Rhinos 20

Huddersfield Giants 0 ... Salford Red Devils 28

Grand Semi-Final Results

Wigan Warriors 8 ... Leeds Rhinos 20

St Helens 19 ... Salford Red Devils 12
