The shrine of St Cuthbert in Durham cathedral was the most important religious site in England until 1170, when the Martyrdom of Thomas Becket caused that mantle to move to Canterbury.

...and shares a name with Ashington, Northumberland, which would have scorned Calor gas having been known in former times as ' The biggest mining village in the world' (though it was a town, really).

Notable buildings in Kirkby Lonsdale include St Mary's Church; the view of the River Lune from the churchyard is known as "Ruskin's View" after John Ruskin, who called it "one of the loveliest views in England". John Ruskin died on 20th January 1900, aged 80, and is buried in Coniston, Cumbria.

Helmside lies just south of the pass of Dunmail Raise. To the north of the pass lies the remnant of the flooded village of Wythburn, most of which is now at the bottom of Thirlmere.

With 13 letters, Buckfastleigh is one of the longest place names in England with no repeated letters. It is tied with Buslingthorpe, Leeds and Buslingthorpe, Lincoln, but exceeded by Bricklehampton, Worcestershire with 14 letters.

Bricklehampton lies near Bredon Hill, which inspired A E Housman to write a poem
He also wrote of Clee Hill, under which Cleobury Mortimer nestles, it sadly no longer has a rail service to Ditton Priors
