Winchester is also twinned with a settlement in the German State of Hesse. Pocklington's "twin" is Trendelburg; Winchester's, Giessen. (Incidentally, Pocklington has another German connection of sorts: an annual beer festival in October, called the "Pocktoberfest" -- a much more modest event than the Munich one to which the name alludes.)

Ilkeston in Derbyshire was also granted the right to hold a Charter Fair.

In East Midlands English -- widely spoken in the area of the above-bolded -- its name is rendered as "Ilson". Similarly with Launceston in Cornwall: local pronunciation likewise contracts three syllables into two, hence "Lanson".

According to the Liverpool Echo, Litherland was invaded by giant spiders in September 2021 (seems to have been one lady scared of a very large spider in her bathroom). Anyone wishing to overcome arachnophobia can pay £95 for a "Tarantula Experience" at Drusilla's Zoo Park, Alfriston, Sussex.

London Zoo used to -- maybe still does -- perform the same service (don't know the cost there). I've had thoughts of availing myself of same; but decided it wasn't really necessary -- I have only mild arachnophobia. I acknowledge that they're fascinating and accomplished creatures, and wish I could like them ...

Piddinghoe in East Sussex was also once administered by the Hundred of Holmstrow.

According to a saying in that locality, "Piddinghoe people shoe their magpies". Seemingly not about cobbling-for-corvids; but referring to the shoeing of oxen -- which thereabouts were, if black and white, called "magpies". Another settlement with relevance to the species Pica pica, is Magpie Green, (just) in Suffolk -- a little way west of Diss.

People from Macclesfield are sometimes referred to as "Maxonians". In similar wise: people from Spalding, Lincolnshire, are sometimes referred to as "Spaldonians".

Narborough lies on the River Nar, a tributary of the Great Ouse. The river's name is a product of back-formation, from the village's name Narborough; not, as is more usual, the other way round. The same situation obtains with Flitton, Bedfordshire -- south of Bedford. The River Flit, on which the village lies -- a tributary of the River Ivel -- takes its name from that of the village: village bore its name, earlier than the river.

Diddington can be accessed by car only from the A1 "Great North Road". The same is true of Gatenby, North Yorkshire, although the road has now been renumbered A6055 following construction of the parallel A1(M).

T. Gwynne Jones (1871 -- 1949) -- Welsh poet, scholar, literary critic, novelist, translator, journalist (and strong opponent of the First World War) -- was born very near Betws yn Rhos; he died in Aberystwyth.

Tamworth, Staffordshire, also has a Castle Hotel (Lord Nelson stayed at the Neath one).

One of Monks Kirby's pubs has the name -- seemingly unique for UK pubs -- of the Denbigh Arms. It would be nice if Denbigh had a pub called the Monks Kirby Arms; but seemingly the best it can do, is the Masons' Arms.
