Salop is an abbreviation of Shropshire dating back some years. On my iPod at the moment so can't easily post links but Wikipedia has some info on it.

I looked up about it after a visit to Wellington where the train ticket says Salop in brackets after.

AFAIK, it doesn't relate specifically to Shrewsbury

Salop does indeed usually refer to the County but years ago a set of "Salop" men with a "Salop" engine would work a "Salop" turn. (And "Salop" would be painted on the buffer beam in GWR days.)

Machynlleth railwaymen (and women) do still refer to Shrewsbury as Salop. Not sure that all other depots do though. It seems to be a generational thing with the likes of Crewe and Chester. The older they are the more likely they are to call 'Shrewsbury' 'Salop'.

Same for us in the South West of the country. We change crews with Salop men at Llandod/Llanwytyd on our CWL turns.
