Unlike the above, Ash is one of the eleven stations in Britain to have the shortest possible name, consistent of three letters.

Town Green station was regularly used as an overnight base for the Royal trains when the Royal family were visiting Knowsley Hall – the home of Lord Derby - or attending the Grand National race meeting at Aintree; there is, of course, a station of that name much nearer to the venue.

Maghull is on the Ormskirk branch of the Northern Line of the Merseyrail network. It was the last station on the branch in Merseyside before the county boundary with Lancashire, until Maghull North station opened in 2018.

The Grade II-listed signal box at the station is a Smith and Yardley type 1 brick box opened in December 1875. Between 1872 and 1882 the firm provided numerous signal boxes for the L&YR, including three that are still standing. These are the Type 2 box at Milner Royd Junction (1874), which closed in Autumn 2018, and two remaining Type 1 boxes, at Bromley Cross and at Hensall (also 1875 and listed), which closed in May 2014.

Burnley Barracks was the terminus of its line for a short period in the 19th century, until construction was completed to further destinations (Colne and Skipton).

Another station which served as a terminus, until its line was extended to Buxton, was Whaley Bridge.
