Looking at a Summer 1987 timetable, I see an unusual service that is shown as running Saturdays from 23 May to 5 September.

Table 38 shows:
Scarborough 1148
Filey 1202
Bridlington (a) 1223
Bridlington (d) 1226
Table 31 shows:
Pontefract Baghill 1358
Moorthorpe 1408
Bolton-on-Dearn 1417
Rotherham Masborough 1432
Sheffield (a) 1446
Table 53 shows:
Rotherham Central 1432
Sheffield (d) 1458
Chesterfield 1516
Derby 1545
Long Eaton 1558
Loughborough 1611
Leicester 1627
The train is shown in tables 31 & 38 as operated by InterCity (but with no 1st class accommodation)

The headcode appears to have been 1M11.

I'm curious...

What traction produced?

Did the train run non-stop Bridlington to Pontefract? (Presumably via the rare route of the Hull avoider, Selby and Burton Salmon)

I think I caught that a couple of years earlier. It was a non-gangwayed suburban DMU (116 off Tyseley??), and yes, Hull curve, Selby, Burton Salmon etc. Took forever, and seemed even longer when you had to cross your legs.

Edit: might be able to find my notes if you want more info.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
In the 1978 timetable it was 1240 Scarborough, Seamer, Filey, Bridlington 1318-20, then 1458 Pontefract Baghill, 1529 Rotherham (Masboro of course), missed Sheffield out, Chesterfield 1559, Derby, Long Eaton, Nottingham 1701-07, Loughborugh, Leicester 1741.
Corresponding northbound started at Wellingborough 0705, Leic, Nott, Derby, Sheff 0955-1000, York, Seamer, Scarborough 1205

Another edit:
this site:
http://www.timewarp.abelgratis.com/ch/q_a1.html
suggests it might have been a 127 hydraulic off Cricklewood!

Thanks. I found a photo of a Peak in 1986 here, and a record of it being a 37 on at least one occasion in 1987.

It's a shame such interesting workings (both in terms of traction and route taken) don't exist these days :(

Platform 5's loco-hauled travel 1985-6 (for summer 85) lists a 45/1 with 0740 Leicester-Scarborough and 1405 Scarborough-Nottingham (no headcodes given).
the 1984-5 book (for summer 84) the same (except 0739 off Leicester)
the 1983-4 book lists an 0726 Luton-Nottingham-Scarborough (change loco at Nottingham), and 1404 return to Luton
the 1982-3 book doesn't list anything resembling that train (although my 78-9 timetable lists one) so possibly a DMU before summer 83?

Edit: just found notes for Sat 18/6/83, the Luton-Scarborough was 45117 and 9 Mk1s at Nottingham 0925, and there was a Scarborough-Sheffield arriving Sheffield 1420 with 37080 and ER Mk1s.
More digging required: my recollection of a DMU could in fact have been a different service, but whatever it was, it went via the Hull avoider and Burton Salmon.

More notes, Sat 13/6/81: 45066 and Mk1s, Wellingborough-Scarborough from Leicester at 0800 to Sheffield via Nottingham (run round) and Alfreton. Then later the same day, picked up the same loco from Rotherham at 1517 on the return Scarborough-Leicester via the old road (Barrow Hill) and got off at Chesterfield.

A year before in 1986 it was a loco-hauled rake of Mk1s, usually with a peak at the front. For example, search for 1M11 in the following link:
http://www.timewarp.abelgratis.com/dy/aug86.html

Yes, those sort of trains were usually a Peak or class 40... etc.

Yes, it is a damn shame they don't exist anymore! Sadly the only vaguely interesting working in or out of Scarborough these days (apart from steam specials etc) is the summer SO St. Pancras-Scarborough and return.

A far cry from the days when all platforms were filled with loco-hauleds every summer weekend plus 2 loco-hauleds every summer weekday.
