Good evening.

I'll be travelling from Swindon to Feltham in a few days, outside the peaks. A single ticket is routed "not via London". The shortest route is the obvious one, changing at Reading. However, Swindon to Windsor and Eton Central, added to Windsor and Eton Riverside to Feltham is less than 3 miles further (by rail, ignoring the short walk in Windsor.

Would this route be "permitted"??

It's permitted, just use the journey planner with via Windsor option.
Unless your ticket is a Advance, that's another case.
Just be curious, didn't you buy a open return, which would be roughly the same as single?

It's a small part of a six day route involving (probably) a Day Ranger at the ELR Gala, a single Manchester to Crewe, a West Midlands Day Ranger, an SVR trip, a 3 in 7 Severn and Solent Rover (including trips on the S&C and WSR, and a day return Taunton to Okehampton), the aforementioned single, a zone 1-6 travel card, a day return from Boundary Z6 to East Grinstead, a single to Stansted Airport, a return to King's Lynn, a single from Ely to Long Eaton (probably splitting at Beeston), a Derbyshire Day Ranger and a single from New Mills to Manchester!

No it's not - it's 72% more expensive. The fares on this route are set by GWR and benefit from its policy of setting the price of long distance singles at approx. 60% of the return price.
