I'm planning a trip to ride the 143s this Saturday (assuming the GWR IET services resume so I can get there).

I've never visited the Cardiff area before so I have a question. If I wanted a relatively quiet ride so I can take some photos/videos of the train, which section of the lines would be best?
I'm guessing the section south of Cardiff would be quite busy on a weekend because of Barry Island?
So the sections north of Cardiff would be quieter?

Bridgends are quite scenic from Barry onwards.
Merthyr tydfil is quite good for squeal and scenery ie after abercyon etc does have a ideal climb to merthyr tydfil. Good gradient.
Good value rover would be explore Cardiff valleys. Valid all day Saturday.
However in my opinion the only bit that it is not so scenic and is one to watch for due to serving constant housing estates is pontypridd to treherbert. And sometimes you do get a few individuals to be wary off.
However said that. Its the final chance off a pacer that matters. More than anything else.

That would be great if you could post gen on whether ecs runs for 0708 and if a 143. If not I will go back to bed. Perhaps they will put a 143 on the Bridgend to Newport instead!

Thanks for your help.
Theres nothing showing as running down this morning, nor amended working notices for Swansea for it so looks like it will just be the booked 153312+153918 on it.

No Canton starts are showing yet on Genius, ill have a look in a bit for actual allocations

Thanks sd0733 I assume that means the morning Swansea to Pad services are running so I will stay in bed.

I appreciate your help with this.

I am a bit thrown as realtime trains is showing the 0708 in platform at Swansea when it hasn't left Carmarthen!!!!

No problem.
It does look like the GWRs are starting at Swansea this morning. A couple have already left.
2315 Cardiff to Carmarthen, which runs to Carmarthen to form 0708 back terminated at Swansea last night so its been there since just gone Midnight ready to come back, its cancelled between Swansea and Carmarthen.

Great thanks that explains it. I guess no 143 on it tomorrow as well. Annoying to arrive one day too late for a final thrash on a mainline pacer...

I cant say for sure but i would say it seems to be unlikely now the 800s are coming back.
Yes would certainly have been something unexpected to be able to do at this stage.

Not so scenic but does have the novelty of token working - presumably this won't be around for much longer.

143622 has been terminated at Cardiff Central after having various issues whilst working the 1344 aberdare to Barry island. On diagramm 104 and is now back on Depot with x3 other Pacers lined up three

Thanks for your suggestions.
In other words, I should really try my best to ride all the way to Bridgend, Merthyr and Treherbert.
While Aberdare and Barry Island are of lower priority.

But on the other hand, looking at the Saturday diagram in the previous page, there may only be 3 Pacers, so I may not have much choice anyway.

There seems to be some issues with allocations as no trains are showing at all at Cardiff. They are only coming up searching for each specific unit.

Interesting. I was seeing some allox at Cardiff but not all of them. Genius for my TOC is being wonky as well so must be a glitch somewhere.

Thanks for using your brain and searching them by unit. That was beyond me this morning

Thanks are due to @sd0733 as I managed to see 622 at Cardiff yesterday. I think I may have taken a pic of its final journey in service as it failed and was taken off to Canton. I believe it was door interlock problems but not certain.

It did fail had many issues from aberdare yesterday whist coupled with 150278. Ex 1344 aberdare to Barry island. However had a nice diversion via danescourt again like the previous Friday when 143625 did the same. It was door interlock issues with the rear end door off pacer next to the 150.
However train on approach to Cardiff Central 143622 Had 4 brake applications on it's way into the station. .
However its just possible there might just might be the odd 143 substitute next two weeks or so. Just might .

Don't know but 602 seemed to be having trouble a few days ago.
143601 and 143625 have recently to.
However whilst going past Cardiff canton Depot yesterday on a diversion from aberdare the ex 1344 to Barry island.
Both 143601 and 143602 and 143625 was parked up all together x3. So it looks like they could all have finished maybe

If the 143s are being retired by the end of this month, and their last timetabled services are today, the 769s certainly need to make sure they behave! If the 769s don't behave, TfW will be left with a lot of short formed Taff Valleys / Bridgend via VoG / Barry Island services without the 143s.

Saying that, I won't be sad to see them go, but I'd much rather be on a 143 + 150 combo with more space, than a much cosier single 150.

Rumours but one should be fact:-

6 x 769 diagrams from new Timetable and Pacers finish
Insufficient crews passed for full 769 diagrams and 2 required for training so Pacers will stay for 2 more weeks.

And then at the end of the month the derogation runs out, I think.

Does anyone know what any temporary diagrams might be?
However will it be a case of short notice ones, i.e. lucky one day, but unlucky the next?

Currently Bank Holiday Monday 31st May is D-Day for TfW's 143s.

Will they be needed the bank holiday weekend as I was told trains terminating at Radyr? They will need less units if that is the case so 28th May be the end if they continue beyond today.

Trying not to speculate... Honest.

Went for the 2106 ex-Merthyr and the Pacer had been pulled off earlier. Passed the down working for the 2206 though and there's still one on that. Going for the 2213 Caerphilly now for a final final bash.
