My friend was at Staines Railway Station this morning and said that a steam train went through there at quite a high speed, would that have been this train? She thought she heard some one say that it was going through to Weymouth or Swanage, but according to the name of this thread, was it only going as far as Bournemouth?

What was the steam loco? & which firm arranged the trip?

Thanks Steve.

It was 1Z50, the 08:22 Waterloo to Weymouth. This was the Bournemouth Express, as it would have passed through on the way to Weymouth.

Organised by the Railway Touring Company and operated by WCRC.

I hope it wasn't that high a speed, as there is a 20mph speed restriction at Staines on the line towards Virginia Water.

Here's my effort, running between Branksome and Parkstone. I only just managed to see it, as I was stuck in traffic. Tried a shortcut which ended up as a "long cut"...

Was just the one through Staines today. As @_toommm_ mentioned, it was 'The Bournemouth Express' railtour, but the train continued to Weymouth where it went into Jersey Siding for a time (albeit not as long as planned due to the delay!), before making the return journey.

I believe it’s 60163 ‘Tornado’ plus a 47 (probably a WCRC one)
It is, and the train is the Northern Belle, commemorating 90 years of the Bournemouth Belle. Departing Victoria 0845

The Dorset Maiden, due to run on the 10th has been rescheduled for Sat 24th

NEWS UPDATE! Weymouth just added as new destination!
This tour was originally planned to run on Saturday 10th July, but has been postponed following the 4-week pause at Step 3 of the Roadmap out of Lockdown.
Northern Belle, 2x57 to Weymouth Sunday 11

Was your trip on Saturday good, apart from the delay, what caused it to be late? Was the return journey better? What was the loco, I could not quite make out the name? Thanks Steve.

After arriving in Bournemouth, Tornado will then run to Swanage for servicing.

Yesterday's loco was 35108 and will be back in action this Friday.
Yesterdays train gradually lost time until it arrived in Southampton, where it missed its path and was held until a suitable slot. It passed Brockenhurst 38 minutes late

It appears the run this Friday (9th) with 35018, will also be commemorating the last run of the Bournemouth Belle on 9th July 1967, the last day of Southern steam. It was diagrammed for steam that day, but the authorities vetoed this at short notice. So the Belle ended its career behind Brush D1924, which worked both the down and return up train.

That must have been very disapointing.

Indeed it was. The end of Southern steam also saw the end of regular express hauled steam and steam confined to the North.

In the final months, several crews tried to achieve the "ton", no mean feat given the official speed limit, in ordinary service and the run down state of the locos. In fact, the record for fastest MN was held by 35003 Royal Mail at 105mph, on 26 June 1967

Well, it's under way and on time - 0926

I guess it was for those turning up to travel on Sunday 9th, as the decision to veto steam on the Belle was made late on the Friday with no public announcement. One consequence of altering some diesel diagrams was that Weymouth had no Brush Type 4 for the 14.07 to Waterloo that afternoon, so had to use MN 35030.
