British Railways ran this club in the early 1980's and every month, published a printed newsletter and a schedule of special excursion trains, to its registered members. Every weekend saw such trains running and most areas in the Greater Manchester area were served by these trains. Some of the trains were "MYSTERY TOURS". A special key ring with the club insignia in it was given to all registered members.

Our family had membership from 1981-1984 and had long distance day excursions on these to Paignton, Folkestone, Southend, etc. We only went on one mystery tour, which ended its journey in LARGS.

Has anyone else on the forum had membership of this club and if so, can you post details of some of your journeys...especially MYSTERY TOURS.

We were never members of any club, but we went on soem Mystery Trips run by the British Rail Western Region in the 1970's. Destinations included Portsmouth (for the Isle of Wight), Hastings, Ramsgate and Brighton. They usually seemed to be seaside towns!

When booking, the travel centre staff marked the seats of a big sheet of paper. No computers then! The trains were always full as well! They usually started from Swansea at around 0630-0700, and picked up at stations up to and including Newport.

There was great excitement on board when soemone came round with a sheet of paper tellign you where you were going to, and with a map and some local inforamtion on it. This never happened until after the last pick up so as not to spoil the surprise!
