What do people feel about the etiquette with regard to this sometimes thorny topic ?

It may be academic on a lot of modern Aircraft on shorthaul whose seats do not have the facility to potentially provoke ire amongst fellow passengers.

Is it best to be in the front row confident "No one can recline on you" , and in these circumstances should you not avail yourself of pressing the button ?

Has anyone got any interesting anecdotes form personal experience about the mayhem that can ensue when someone reclines ?

Reclining is a feature of the seat that you have paid for and thus you are entitled to do so if you wish.

However, it is right to consider the person behind while doing so, so recline slowly to give them time to move if they need to.

For short haul it is better not to provide it at all as it isn't really necessary.

What happens if the mechanism is broken and the seat reclines automatically when you sit on it?

(The bloke sitting behind me on a 5-hour Moscow to Siberia flight 20 years ago really wasn't happy.)

Reclining should only be used if the person behind you says ok. If not no as it's anti-social imho

Most of the first class seats on OeBB Railjet have that, umm, "feature".
