Am very close to buying a house that's beside the tracks in Putney (Waterloo mainline).
It's one house over, trains visible out the back. I live pretty near to the Thameslink route in Southwark now, so am okay with noise. But does anyone know about freight on this line / night noise etc? It's a four track section whereas I'm currently near a twin track.

There are a few freights (but at obscure times, due to lack of paths in peak hour), but not a lot on that section. Trains run until after midnight and start early on what is a commuter route. It is a busy line.

Not sure where in Putney, the line is in a deep cutting at Wandsworth end, but going towards Barnes the 4 track section is very near the fence so you will hear everything

Luckily for you, there are not many regular freight movements at night;
the last movement of the day is the Southampton to Mountfield gypsum
train at 22.45, with nothing then until one or two 'as required' stone trains
around 04.30.

So most nights you should have a gap between approx 00.15
(the last passenger train)
and 04.30 with no trains passing whatsoever.
