Really? Maths isn't your strong point, is it? Why would somebody contracted to earn £50k+ pa for a 35 hour week need to work the same number of hours again, to earn only half the pay???

Given the figures quoted so far in this thread, you'd have to average little more than 1 RDW per week to get an extra £25k, and you wouldn't necessarily have to do a great deal of work on said rest day. Certainly not anywhere near requiring a 12 hour duty and only taking one day off per fortnight

No, because it costs the Union money to do so and hacks off the members as well. They want their union reps to negotiate a deal that they can vote on. You don’t pay your union subs for the union to put any old rubbish to you.
I'm sorry but that is exactly the opposite of how unions are supposed to work, but does demonstrate that there are problems on both sides of the negotiating table.

It doesn’t cost the union much to hold a referendum on a pay deal. That can be done online, and just needs an official in the union to organise it. The RMT, Unite and TSSA each did this for the NR deal quickly and effectively.

It is Ballots for industrial action that cost a fair bit of money, especially for large ‘electorates’, because they have to be secure and independently verifiable.

So just under 1 a week. Not nothing, but hardly caning it.

Indeed, basically a five day week.

You can't 'lose' something that was never there.

Except it has been there, all the time since he joined more than a decade ago. Until a year ago. And now it isn’t.

Perhaps it’s just terminology…

When we talk of 5 day weeks some have been used to a basic 9-5 or 8-4 Monday to Friday. Some work regular shifts on the same site and many now work shifts from home. It's not simple like that for shifts on the railway.

The basic salary sounds very good. The quoted RDW rates sounds excellent, but are they for the unsocial hours and irregular shifts demanded?

It .might help understanding of the background if a TPE driver and/or guard were to post a typical month's shift patterns. Irregular after midnight finishes snd very eatly starts aren't attractive to many with family and social lives.

Fitting in extra days to that shift pattern clearly required a substantial payment or it wouldn't have been made - supply and demand! The flexibility of overtime and RDW usually makes such payments attractive to both sides - until we get into meltdown situations like we have now, particularly at TPE.

As a senior rail manager myself, I would be embarrassed to put such an offer forward to the staff or the unions. Despite the contractual requirements in an NRC or ERMA, I’m not sure I could do it.

Get the pay sorted and it will improve. If the productivity measures are required, you do them anyway but linking them to a low increase in pay is beyond stupid.

£47 per hour overtime rate isn't any old rubbish. If put to a referendum, imo , it would be an overwhelming yes.
In danger of straying into Cashley Cole territory there. Unless a driver can earn in a few hours overtime what an average worker earns in a week the offer is embarrassing and some old rubbish. When this comes from management I think we can see how the railway has got into its financial difficulties and why the government is now determined to cut costs.

Ok. We’ve decided that this has probably run its course now and we’ve started going over old ground.
