Trivia: Shortest speed restriction

Anybody know what the situation is just outside Rochdale heading east? Trains accelerate out of the station then briefly brake, then get going again

They shouldn't brake unless the driver has exceeded the 30mph PSR between Rochdale West Jn & East Jn due to poor driving technique. Could also be a trainee under instruction, listen carefully and you might hear them getting a clip round the ear from their instructor.

Think back to a few decades ago when 'maximum line speed', with restrictions to that line speed, was the norm rather than thinking that every change in permissible speed is there for a reason as it seems to be today. A lot of the older setups are disappearing which confuses new drivers and makes them think that those seemingly odd and very short increases in permissible speed that are left are an oddity.

The one thing I dislike about the previous arrangement is it makes reading old sectional appendices much harder!
