I was told that the special effects company the commissioned the loco were very keen to avoid CGI and to build a convincing, though somewhat unconventionally powered, loco. They wanted it to stand up to close 'nerd' scrutiny Someone has done a sufficiently good job to 'fool' plenty of people on this thread. And it is certainly the case that money would be no object for the project.
The photos of the loco at Loughborough show 2 of Ian Riley's vans in the foreground. Is it possible they built it?

As requested by @AndyPJG:

Tom Cruise stunned locals in a small Yorkshire village when he turned up by helicopter for a film shoot.
The diminutive star touched down in Levisham, near Pickering, to record scenes on the local vintage railway.
A face mask covered the 58-year-old's famous pearly smile as he thrilled fans with a wave on his way to the set.
The actor - who is known for performing his own stunts - was later seen clambering on top of a carriage for one daredevil sequence.

Did the made-up loco ever come to its fiery death falling off a bridge in Poland or somewhere else? Or is it still alive and well?

According to the TV tonight, a quarry in Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire is having rail track laid which ends in mid-air. A lake is being made and filled with water, into which a locomotive/train is due to be launched for Mission Impossible 7. Tom Cruise is believed to be in the area already. So a watery end for our Brit look-alike locomotive?

It was always intended to be ending up being destroyed. It was actually designed wihtout brakes but then they realised it might be handy so that they could ensure they were able to stop on the practice runs- they would only get one chance of filming it going over the edge

I have seen some video of stunts being performed on top of a carriage. Steam loco leading, 2 coaches, wagon full of crew in hi-viz, Class 66 trailing. There was 'smoke' coming out of the leading steam loco chimney. there was only a brief glimpse of the steam loco in the video. Is it the 'Britannia' mock loco (which I know was fitted with smoke generators) being propelled by the 66, or was it a local steam loco?

It's the Brit mock-up in all scenes, being propelled by 1 or 2 66s.

Then why test it on the Great Central? And why go to the effort of making it look specifically like a Brit?
Quite. If requiring a French loco to run on British infrastructure, why not make a scaled-down French-looking thing? Still, it's someone else's money and they can spend it how they want. At least it looks like a plausible locomotive (as compared to, say, kiddie's toys that look like a tractor with a random rod on the wheels).

I'm getting rather concerned over people trying to use logic on this thread, it's a film, since when did the film industry use anything approaching logic?

That’s the thing isn’t it?
I’d see it a bit like this:

We need a steam locomotive for this film. What can we use as we’re filming it in the UK?
Well...

1) A Brit looks close enough with a few embellishments to a foreign looking locomotive that your average film goer would be completely convinced.

2) All the drawings are available and it’ll be reasonably easy (especially with this films budget) to make a non working new one that looks like a replica of a large foreign looking locomotive.

3) It needs to be built to UK loading gauge as that’s where we’re making the film.

4) It needs to be propelled as part of the filming, so all of the motion needs to work properly and it’ll need to be tested somewhere as there’s only going to be one chance to get this take right!

5) We’ve rung around and for some reason no matter how much money we offer them, nobody seems to want to sell us a working British steam locomotive for a one way trip to oblivion. Even if we mention the name Tom Cruise...

Now being discussed here:
