In my cynical view, the airport's owner sees public transport enhancements as useful bargaining chips for airport expansion. Why waste a project (by building it now) that could pave the way for something major that requires political approval in the future.

It was remarkable how many brand new non-TfL airport funded local bus routes have suddenly materialised, (many with Heathrow branding on the rear of vehicles) in the last 15 months alone. All whilst a high profile lobbying campaign for a 3rd runway was being carried out...

So very disappointed with this delay. The direct rail link from Reading (and Slough) town centres would be a huge boost for those locations, tipping the balance in favour of town centres over out-of-town business parks that sprawl along the motorway.
We need to think beyond Covid (it will pass) and invest in the infrastructure to underpin our urban centres and sustainable travel.
