In his excellent book 'Crewe to Carlisle' (1969) Brian Reed refers to Wigan North Western station having "two islands and one single platform". He makes no mention of any bay platforms, so does this imply that the present bay platforms were added during the 1970s reconstruction scheme?

No. The 30s map linked shows the layout quite clearly - the side platform he mentions has disappeared altogether, and the down island is much slimmer (having lost a pair of bays AND a middle road).

This photo shows the two south-facing bays, plus middle road on the Down island platform in the pre-1970s layout.
The "one single platform" can also be seen alongside the wall on the far left.

There was also a single north-facing bay on the Down island, used by trains to Blackburn via Red Rock until 1960 (with a daily non-advertised workers' train to Chorley ROF continuing after this).
