Looking closely at renders and photos, the 196s seem to have a slightly different carbody structure, with five windows in the centre of the carriage between the passenger doors. On the Northern units, there are only four (larger?) windows. This has allowed for the 196s to align the seats better, and fit more rows.

Compare images of 195s and 331s with page 45 of this document.

I think Northern would've been better with 196s, although since CAF will have refined their concept over time, it probably wouldn't have been possible to order 195s in this newer layout.

It's just different door positions. Northern's units have doors *actually* at thirds, which "third generation" UK units haven't had, they are mostly at quarters like the WM units.

Edit: no, it's not, it does appear that the WMR unit has one more window and the others made smaller accordingly. Also the WMR unit has a plug door for crew, whereas Northern has a manual door.

A painted body shell for a 196 non-driving
carriage is at CAF Llanwern (as of last week). No windows or interior fittings apparent. But it is a 3-5-3 window arrangement.

Just found a picture on google of it and it looks to me like the same body shape as a 195 but with smaller windows between the doors to make it 5 rather than 4.

Doesn't appear to give a good view on the offside due to the emergency door in the middle.

They're in-service between-unit doors to allow units in multi that are all so-fitted to be walked between as one train that can be walked through - the same as on 150/2s, 153s, 155s, 156s, 158s etc, and also more modern 172/2s, 172/3s, 350s, 375s, 377s, 379s, 380s, 385s, 387s etc... do those classes of unit also have the same problem...?

The more modern units have this problem as I recall the older units don't because the door is flush with the rest of the front (or sufficiently so not to have sight issues).

Ah right OK... It obviously passes regulations though. Yes the 360s were going to have the doors but there were concerns, and there was the 385 windscreen issue, but still...

There's something about modern end-gangwayed units I actually find very attractive that I can't put into words!

Functional, as a train should be. Northern's ordering of non-gangwayed 2-car units was madness. WMR have got this very right.

Their concept interiors look much better than Northern's, too.
