My username says it all about mine, not just the startup motors of the Met Cam variant, but what I call it's "roaring traction" at 60-75mph as well (the BREL type with it's new motors are also good above the speed they still sound like the original, maybe 20-30mph).
That’s because the BREL units still use the Brush motors.

EMU: Class 319. The sound made by the traction inverter sounds like a violin to me, a really relaxing sound.
There isn’t an inverter, the 319s are DC motored. The motor electronics do make a good sound though.

I quite like the 769s as well - to hear the diesel engine as it sets off only for the familiar electric sound to kick in soon thereafter (so weird hearing that sound without the pan up or shoes down!).

Since the 319s have been mentioned multiple times:

The closely related 325s also sound brilliant, especially at speed. Dunno if it's just me, but they've always seemed to be even louder than even the 319s at speed:

At full tilt - 373. You cannot beat that heavenly whir.

Pulling away - Class 91 sound so powerful they used to give me the chills (plus they look real mean too)

Not a loco or multiple unit, but I absolutely love the gentle hiss each Mark III coach makes as it goes past at low speed.

Falcon, a fine looking locomotive and quite swift.
Hymeck for their looks and 86s for sheer power.
Sorry lads, I'm a bit old!o_O

The best sounding DMU was the Trans Pennine class 124, with its deep throaty growl as it pulled away from a stop.

Did they sound different to most other DMUs? The only class I've found to sound quite distinctive is the class 110, which has Rolls Royce engines mounted differently to other classes.

Yes, very different, louder and with a deeper note. They had bigger engines than other DMUs. Class 123s had the same engines IIRC.

Ah, yes, the Albion 230hp one. I think 115s had them too.

I seem to recall 104s were a little raspier and deeper than say 101/108s.

So perhaps.

What's those new Transpennine locos? Class 68? They sound well good.

317s for me, motor coach, hot day, windows open, fast running is heaven plus the fact it drowns out annoying noise like mobile phones, personal stereos and kids.

I've a great fondness for the trash of an EMD 8-645:

On the electric side of things, the series 481 EMUs on the Berlin S-Bahn:

And also Berlin-S-Bahn-special hustle alarm:

Diesel : Deltic
Steam - Anything Gresley 3-cylinder
DMU - none
EMU - pre-war SR units. The whine of the motors and the sound of the compressor.

the sound of the compressor
Now we're talking. The compressor noise on a class 310 is one of the sounds of my youth (much faster and more vigorous than that on third rail units, as I remember it …) … and then, rather more annoyingly, the pssssssting … psssssting … psssssting from the intermediate trailer in the class 321 that replaced it … though I don't recall how the intervening class 317's pneumatics stood up in that illustrious company.

You didn't specify it had to be the engine sounds, so id like to put forward the door release bleeping on a Class 800. I love it!
Indeed I didn't, whatever aural aspect of any given loco/unit type that appeals to you most is welcome here. :)

I rather like the distinctive "clunk" on older London Underground trains, just as the driver notches up and just before the train starts moving. Still exists on the 72 Stock on the Bakerloo.

Ah well if none engine sounds are allowed then it's got to be the clunk of slamdoors. I really miss that at stations.

The reassuring, soothing sound of the brakes on Mark 2 stock.

I love the sound of traditional EP compressors.

"Um-um-um-um-um-um-um....."etc

Compressors are something I'm very geeky about indeed. The EPB/VEP etc ones sounded very nice, certainly. Others seemed quite a lot harsher on the ears.
