3 good documentaries from 1984 on Channel 4. losing Track. It appears to be a 10 part series but I can only find episodes 3, 5 and 10.

3 - Nationalisation http://youtu.be/goh_sbtAhcY
It covers the rail ways mainly, the back ground, legacy of it etc plus how busses, road haulage etc was also taken over.

5. Beaching report http://youtu.be/wV63tqmZ63M
It covers the background to the beeching report, some of the downfalls and the impact of it still being felt 20 years on

10. Who's loss http://youtu.be/XMCBwQGjl-4
Not watched this one yet, but it's part of the same series,

Didn't see this mentioned so apologies if it has been: the original series of 'The Tube' (~23 minute episodes, aired between 2003(?) and 2006 on sky 1 etc.) are available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/BottomDriveTraction/playlists

Of course, the Underground has changed considerably since then, but if you want to go back to the times of plain white 'D' stock, the days when the Victoria line was '67 stock and (most importantly) when the Met was run with A stock, then it's for you.

How many of you remember the series 'Trainspotting' from 2002 to 2004, with Mark Found and Mark Collins? Both series are in a Youtube playlist here, although episode 1 of series 2 seems to have been deleted. I've linked to the playlist rather than have 18 or so episodes clogging up the screen.

Trainspotting

Then there was also Railwatch, broadcast daily on the BBC in 1989.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there...

All the shows in that series are wonderful. John Pitman was wonderfully laconic, and the footage..well, I was seven or eight year old when those programmes were filmed and the scenes take me right back to those times. The smell of leaded petrol and loco diesel fumes practically leaks from the laptop screen. Superb.

Its only a few years before, but it seems a world away from the late 1980's and early 90's of my younger years !

Someone's recently started posting full episodes of the BBC's Making Tracks, presented by Bob Symes and Mary-Jean Hasler:

There were 18 episodes across three series from 1993-1995, focusing on steam in Britain and abroad. It was evidently popular enough to make it onto BBC One, but then disappeared all of a sudden. There are other bits of footage on YouTube as well. I've got most episodes on tape so if I ever get the equipment to upload them, I will do so

Also would highly recommend all six episodes of The Train Now Departing, the BBC series broadcast in 1988 to mark 20 years after the end of steam. It has the sort of gravitas you rarely get from modern BBC documentaries:

The Long Drag:
The West Highlander:
The Holiday Line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtKAmiE1mkM
Steam on the Isle of Man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AWSG4I0m5g
Lines of Industry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D40hk9WNAh0
The Survivors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15Tb9Dsh3XE

Some others from ITV in the 80s:

Mallard - The Drake's Progress: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED3m2r8u8kU
Steam on the Settle and Carlisle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a12H63J6gC0
Didcot 20 - A Celebration (GWS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ5e9SfJ9Vk

And there's also the Seconds from Disaster episodes on Ladbroke Grove: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz34YpGCUj4, and the Kings Cross fire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIAenEFpomU

These were (re)broadcast last year on Quest. As 30 minute shows they were very nice gap fillers off my DVR. Second series much better than the first.

Dadrail does some interesting short videos on YouTube about various aspects of the railways. It's a channel done by a main line train driver

Anyone have a copy of STVs Distant Signals 1986 covering the end of staffed stations on the WHL before RETB was introduced?

UK's Worst Rail Operators, first shown in Spring 2002.

PART ONE...Northern Ireland Railways and Virgin CrossCountry.

PART TWO...Arriva Trains Northern (or "Arriva Northern" as it seems to be erronously referred to!) and First Great Western.

PART THREE...Re-Cap of the four nominated TOCs, Judges vote...and the "award" at the end!

Lots of long gone liveries (Virgin "Kitkat"...FGW "Fag Packet"...Northern Spirit to name a few)...long withdrawn DEMUs in Northern Ireland, HSTs and loco hauled trains on VXC and FGW HSTs before their refurbishment in the late noughties...!

BTF, Round trip to Glasgow: A short clip following a journey on the APT. 1982.
The APT video is blocked in the UK due to a copyright claim by the BBC, but there is a soundtrack for the theme of the documentary:

I've found this channel called "The Train Channel". It has some old NSE training videos and if anyone could tell me where to find the sort of music they use at the start of some of them please let me know!

The Train Channel:
https://www.youtube.com/user/BottomDriveTraction/videos

There's also "Cr*pBRvideos", which is annoying as they have some good videos but due to their channel name being watermarked on every video, it ruins it a bit. I won't link here.

I've stumbled on an interesting history of the Leeds New Line from Heaton Lodge-Farnley via Heckmondwike, Cleckheaton, Birstall and Gildersome. Some of the sound effects are a bit different, but a lot of effort has clearly gone into it and the actual history is sound. It was of personal interest to me as my childhood house overlooked the old Birstall Town station site and I believe this route could have been very useful to alleviate the horrendous congestion on the A62 if it had have been retained.
