Am I right in thinking that there is no interworking between the West Midlands to London and Holyhead/Chester to London services?
No, its just that there are far more Holyhead/Chester services than West Midlands.
There are a couple of diagrams they stay on WM services all day, but they all have to get to/from Barton UN Depot at some point during the week.

Getting more and more unlucky to have an unrefurbished set, plus June completion is still on target.

Hey, don't turn it around on us ;) If we're advertised a feature, you'd think we should be able to trust that it works, no?

I always bring a charger, but when my backpack is so full that it's going to cause everything to topple out if I'm rummaging through it to get my lead, it'd be so much easier if seeing as there are wireless chargers right there, they worked!

A USB cable comes free with the phone, btw - but from iPhone 15 (2023's new model) onwards it's USB-C which does not fit into USB sockets on trains.
I have a Samsung S23 Ultra which charges at up to 45W through USB-C, and up to 15W through wireless charging, and yesterday went to Birmingham International and back from Euston. I decided to sit at a table in Standard Premium on the journey there on the table for one and found the wireless charger a challenge to find the correct spot to charge it up, once I did, it worked fine, albeit a bit slow, but it still got me from 85% to 100% by the time we got to Birmingham.
On the return journey, I went to a Standard aircraft-style seat and had my charger plugged into the 13A socket in the back of the seat in front of me, and it kept starting up and dropping out, and not really charging up. I swapped my USB-C 45w PD charger for an older 18w PD charger that I had@, and it worked fine.
It seems there is not enough power in these 13A plug sockets to run a high-powered charger for a modern phone.
The 45w charger works fine on the Hitachi Javelin High-Speed trains that I use to get from Kent to London.

Went past Central Rivers around lunchtime and 221114 was stood outside de-branded. Presumably off to Cross Country soon.

As things stand, I am next due on a 390 on the 18th of June. It will definitely be a refurbished set then, regardless of how many carriages.

And a USB cable comes free with the phone, btw - but from iPhone 15 (2023's new model) onwards it's USB-C which does not fit into USB sockets on trains.

If you can afford nearly £1K for a new iPhone a £10 USB A-C cable is not going to break the bank.

I have a 15 Pro and it's basically always charged off A because I have several multi way A chargers at home I see no point in replacing.

(Selfie in Coach K of 390020, original VT interior, 18/5/24)

It was an emotional day for me — who long time forumers will remember as a lifelong Virgin enthusiast. If we discount twingate, it’s probably what my less than admirably behaved, ADHD-ridden early-teenage self was most known on this forum for back in 2017/2018. — to arrive at Lancaster on the way home from staying at my partner’s in Cumbria to find 002 was my train back to Crewe (for Cardiff). When there’s only two unrefurbished ones left and a fleet of fifty-six, to get one unexpectedly like that was some luck, if sad, as I won’t end up on one ever again now.

Although I think the refurbishment is a massive improvement, and indeed will probably mean I take more journeys in 2nd than 1st/SP now, I will really miss my childhood favourite train as I knew it, and seeing those red and blue seats, and the brown walls (and of course the convenience store style shop with the self service doors which has sadly perished with the refurb), for the last time was really special. Not to mention the little tables in former Virgin Trains First Class, shown here as Standard Premium. Here, luck was even more on my side, as Coach K was for some reason declassified so it was a little free upgrade.

Alas, my luck soon ran out… I received two shocks from the charging plug socket, one of which was so bad I could still feel it in my legs half an hour later. I reported it to the TM who phoned an engineer and turned off the power in K to prevent it happening to anyone else. He also took my name and address for some reason. Great guy though. Very concerned and pro-active.

Anyway, that and the hellish 4 hour 197 journey that followed aside, I enjoyed the final trip on a Virgin Trains interior Pendolino. The 390 will always be my favourite train regardless of who operates it, but it was a goodbye to an enormous part of my childhood.

They'll have reported it as a passenger accident and the accident form will ask for the passenger's name and address - pretty standard but how unfortunate!

Strangely enough I am with you on the 390 - I'm rather older than you but whilst I always liked the loco hauled sets and went out of my way to ride on them, then teenaged me was very impressed with the 390 on introduction and I have always thought they were excellent and revolutionary trains, particularly when they were extended to a suitable length - the original 8 car formations were too short. They were just smart - the only thing I didn't really get was the brown interior panels which reminded me of cigarette stained pub fittings!

I have to say I will also miss the VT shop. Avanti’s refurbished shop is just too minimalistic and so much variety of products available has been lost

Good memories.

I was on the first public Manchester-London Pendolino (I think) in 2003 - the 06:43 from Piccadilly to Euston calling at Stockport, Wilmslow and Watford Junction. I was definitely on the first 07:00 Piccadilly to Euston calling at Stockport only in due course. At the time I generally went First Class and the service was generally OK.

So now they're old hat but not actually bad for their age.

Virgin was over-rated but generally still OK. They understood the basics of customer service, at least.

Not only is the variety of products lost, but when I first went to one I was told by the person at the till that staff were not consulted in the design phase, which for me personally I would hope at least had some weight seeing as they'll be the ones working it and spending the most time there. The design might be functional (can't say that with full confidence though) but I don't think I've seen anyone who prefers the new onboard shop to the old ones.

Last year I was talking to the lady on the shop and I asked her, “did you work for, you know? Are we even allowed to say it?”

With a laugh she said “What, Virgin Trains? Yeah, I worked for them.” And then a little more sadly, “They treated us better…”

I wonder how many ex-Virgin Avanti staff would jump at moving back to any new Virgin that may pop up, given the chance.

I just want to see Virgin get their Pendolinos back.
