This Orient Express is supposed to have been replicated in "painstaking detail" according to the Doctor...yet...

There are no ashtrays and no one is smoking

When I went on the Orient Express there was no smoking. I do not recall seeing any ashtrays.

I overheard a conversation in the messroom the other day - "I don't like Doctor Who, it's too far-fetched"...

By the look of the attire it was meant to be circa 1920's :p

People dress up to go on the Orient Express (there are rare shots of me in a dinner suit on it). Most of the staff looked like they did on Saturday night when I went on it.

Capaldi is a fine doctor and I liked Frank Skinner in the latest episode, pity he didn't become the Dr's companion. Didn't recognize John Sessions

Frank Skinner was good in that role, but I'm not sure he'd want to be tied down for several months as a companion, nice though it might have been!

Sshh, that one is on the Sky Box waiting to be watched :D

Must admit it's taking some time to warm to Peter as The Doctor, it took a while for me to warm to Matt Smith though as well.

It's all my sons fault, he's Dr Who mad since David Tennant & Matt Smith (he was a bit young when Christopher Ecclestone was The Doctor). We went up to the Dr Who Experience in Cardiff and it was ok, small but ok.

That's what I remember from Microsoft Train Simulator's interpretation of the Orient Express; smouldering cigarettes in the ashtray, gentle piano music, and the sounds of ghost people (because this was 2001, where rendering people in a simulator would've caused your PC to melt!).

Hi all.

Watching the latest episode of Doctor Who, they land in an area of disused railway, with a railway station and canopy in the background, and the sidings are labelled Bristol Sidings (I think!) Does anybody know what this railway station was?

Edit: Mind, it looks in very good condition to be disused! And also, they go into a shed with various engines in :D

Thanks,

Brick60000

Not watched it since Jon Pertwee was Doctor Who, so afraid I'm out!

According to the associated Dr Who Extra programme, the tunnel scenes with the Class 117 DMU were filmed on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. So it was presumably in the Greet tunnel and Greet shed.

The outside parts were the Barry Tourist Railway just past Barry Island station. The tunnel scenes were at Gloucester although I hear that some of the tunnel scenes were a set.

The sheds were next to Barry station.

Don't get too excited but there's a train with headcode display this week.

Indeed - the 18:21 Swansea to Shrewsbury Heart of Wales service. Luckily for Clara it was running a minute late by the time it came past her. That tunnel must have been a few minutes north of Llandrindod.

After the driver crashed his train and spent some time with Clara, he did a good job of making up time - he was only 3 late into Knighton!

I believe the terrifying Christopher Ecclestone two-parter - The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances - were also filmed at the Barry Tourist Railway, where it substituted for a London goods yard.

The more you know. ;)

"Bristol Sidings 344" to be precise.

Unsure what the 344 is meant to refer to (unless it's an in-joke I haven't got yet). It certainly wouldn't be a (realistic) milepost number, as even the dialogue refers to them being 120mi from where they should be. Even in metric it'd only be 193km...!

Edit: Well, that's eerie. http://random.khyle.org.uk/344.png

...which there was a sly nod to in last week's Orient Express episode where the Doctor asked "Are you my mummy?" to the mummy ;)

Getting dangerously off-topic now, so bedtime it is!

Not watched it because new Who has got awful ever since Tennant went, Smith was ok sometimes but this current series isn't worth the effort. However I would guess it'll be some sort of overwhelming story arc, like Bad Wolf, the drums, the crack, that sort of thing.

As far as I'm concerned, it was another poor episode last night. I lost interest completely half way through. I can't put my finger on it but it seemed like I'd seen it all before.

The only good thing about it was the fact that Danny Pink didn't appear much.

Agreed - bring back some assistants with a bit of decolletage aka Tegan :p

The first train, which has the headcode A113, is an inside joke which appears in a lot of Pixar films and other TV animation

Room A113 is the 1st year Graphic Design classroom at California Institute of the Arts.

Has the BBC or a CGI subcontractor been recruiting internationally?

Probably, and I thought that both the headcodes were slightly anomalous. 2M65 means something that runs to the (former) Midland Region, and probably through at least one major interchange - hardly appropriate, even if the whoniverse of that time had Class 117s in mainline service (edit: and I'm presuming in the 21st century).

As well as that, there was a medical anomaly at about the fifteen minute mark that I picked up on: http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?p=1944830#post1944830

I will buck the trend and say that I've really been enjoying the programme this this year. Capaldi has been brilliant and the writing has been great.

There's room for all viewpoints!

I understand some people even liked El Dorado and Triangle (younger members may have to look these up!)

Capaldi just gets better, I thought the 117 was a hornby

also, the latest ep reminded me of the at least partially lost Yeti story with Patrick Troughton
