Yeah , done the whole route , the 1007 from Berwick to Newcastle . Must of been the only person crazy enough to do so.

Glad you enjoyed it! Can't believe you managed the whole run without a break, coming from Newcastle I'm normally desperate to get off the bus by Alnwick. Luckily the bus stops right outside Barter Books...

@transmanche, one if the afternoon boards on the 685 is a double decker these days because of the schoolkids from Brampton.

I very nearly got off at Morpeth . I had some time in Berwick before hand and had lots off time in Newcastle before taking the HST up to Glasgow .

They should publish the whole list if only to get people onto buses. Every route on that list is somebody's favourite.

Bususers.org says
A website of ‘Britain’s Most Scenic Bus Routes’ will be produced later this summer, particularly aimed at visitors from abroad who are unfamiliar with our public transport system.
IMHO equating ‘Britain’s Most Scenic Bus Routes’ with Britain's public transport system is misleading, to put it politely....

Why?

These top scenic bus routes are very well run, imho.
Potentially the argument that there isn’t a system of frictionless travel that promotes modal shift as per (insert country) and is enabled by properly designed bus lanes that allow multi doored, bonded glazed citybuses to seamlessly link with trams etc - think I’ve covered most of the old tropes there ;)

Is there anywhere else that full-size double-deckers make such a tight squeeze - alongside the harbour and the reverse into that tiny bus bay? Almost tempted to claim it's Britain's smallest bus station! But not to go off-topic, I too would vote for that X18, along perhaps with the York to Whitby 840 across the N Y Moors.

I believe St Ives in Cornwall has a small tight bus station as well, Google Earth shows just about get a couple of full size buses in.

Only thing on the 840 last bus on the full eastbound trip is far too early, think 13.15 from Leeds.

I expect Coastliner will now have to deploy duplicates after all this publicity. Also I hope they allocate the newest buses so customers can get the full luxury experience (not that there is much wrong with the older buses)

St Ives does have room for a few more - probably three and a parking space for another https://flic.kr/p/V78Dwd - one of the best views at which to wait for a bus!

Smallest uk bus station... Monmouth?

Well, if the Craster bus stop counts as a bus station it really is going to be hard to beat!

IIRC it's the Arriva 1245 from Newcastle, 1515 from Carlisle. It's kids from William Howard heading back to Low Row, Greenhead and Haltwhistle.

Well, if the Craster bus stop counts as a bus station it really is going to be hard to beat!

Reckon the old Hexham bus station was tighter than that.

That's a 16:42 arrival at Whitby to form the 17:45 Sux 17:00 SuO return working due Leeds 21:06 SuX 20:27 SuO. On Sundays a change of bus on the 13:15 is required at Malton.

Thanks for that. Agree about the 36 too and wonder how Wales has no scenic routes!

I like the Leeds-Manchester CityZap Ainley Top section, you can see for miles over Elland & Halifax on a good day, i also like 576 Bradford-Halifax, for the Boothtown-Queensbury section when the route clings on the side of a hill, not one to go on if you suffer from vertigo.

22, Moreton Cross-Chester Avon buses is a nice route, goes through Meols-Hoylake-West Kirby-Newton-Greasby-Arrowe Park-Heswall-Parkgate-Neston-Willaston, takes good 2 hours, can have great vies over the River Dee to Wales especially around Little Neston & Parkgate

Funnily enough, I did two on Saturday which is why I queried it.

The 172 (I did from near Bridgend to Aberdare) is an absolute stunner of a route; I don't know why it's taken me so long to get round to doing it. The run from Bridgend to Gilfach Goch is quite lovely and then you're into the hills with the climb up to Penrhys giving stunning views of the Rhondda, and then again the section from Maerdy and the descent into Aberdare.

I wondered if it was in the list as it was glorious (though perhaps the grinding through Tylorstown and Tonyrefail count against it. However, I agree with you - it is a classic!

In addition, I also had a run out on the 303 from Barry to Bridgend as it hugs the coastline and delves into the Vale of Glamorgan and back to the coast, before rounding the inlet at Ogmore with views across the Bristol Channel and over to Exmoor. I had done the route before (but many moons ago on a Willowbrook bodied Leopard so that dates it) but had forgotten just how lovely it is.

My favorites in Wales are the T3 Wrexham to Barmouth, its scenic all the way through, but especially after passing Bala heading west, the 19 Llandudno - Llanwrst via Conwy and one, the number of which I've forgotten, between Porthmadog and Barmouth

I was surprised to note the omission of First Greater Manchester's 350 service from Oldham to Ashton-under-Lyne. It offers a longer - though considerably more scenic - alternative to the 409 service between the two towns.

The full route takes in breathtaking views from Scouthead towards Oldham, Manchester city centre, and further afield. Between Greenfield and Micklehurst, glorious views of Roughtown and Lydgate in the distance. If you catch any of the part route journeys from Micklehurst you miss the stunning views from Saddleworth. Instead you also get superb views of Manchester city centre and the Winter Hill transmitter as well as Hartshead Pike (a short walk from one of the stops on Mossley Road).

The 343 (or the 340 on Sundays, early evenings, and Bank Holidays) offer wonderful views of Mossley which can be seen from Huddersfield Road. One stop, on Brushes Estate, is handy for walks around the Walkerwood and Swineshaw reservoirs.

With the 350 there's a greater chance of finding double decker buses along the full route. On the 343, usually Optare Solos or Enviro200s (operated by Stott's Tours). On the 340 (First Greater Manchester by evening, Stagecoach Manchester on Sunday and Bank Holiday daytimes), single decker buses are commonplace.

I agree with you about the 303... though the ride is spoilt by the operator tending to send any old rubbish that's left over at the end of run out on to the route.

Another couple of routes that can be added to the list for Wales are 119 Swansea- Rhossili via Cefn Bryn... the views from the top of Cefn Bryn are absolutely stunning... you can see BOTH the north AND south coasts of the Gower... and can see for miles taking in a whole swathe of sw wales. Also the 117 Killay-Oxwich- Scurlage would be well worth a ride. more spectacular views of the S Gower coast as the bus fights it's way down the narrow lanes... and yes in the summer it IS a fight to get through with long stretches of single track lane with no passing places... and if you want to know what narrow really is wait until you get to Pitt Farm... the bus has to squeeze between 2 walls... with literally an inch spare either side... for some strange reason only baby solos are used on this route

The only ones I can say with certainty for double deckers are the 36, 184, 555, X93, with the 599 being an open top, and the trips on the 508 thatvrun between Penrith and Patterdale are also open top.
The 77/77A and B3 are both definite single deck routes, and I'm pretty sure the 24 and 124 are as well.
The Scottish Citylink services are all coaches.
