Friday 25/11/77
On Fridays I got away early from college, so would sometimes take a trip out to Skipton for a liquid lunch, and to pick up the 1150 Glasgow – Nottingham:
DMU Harrogate – Leeds, Leeds – Skipton
45077 1514 Skipton – Leeds
47433 1635 Leeds – Wakefield Westgate
46033 1659 Wakefield Westgate – Leeds
45021 1742 Leeds – Wakefield Westgate
47475 1834 Wakefield Westgate – Bradford Exchange “The Bradford Executive”
DMU Bradford Exchange – Leeds, Leeds – York
A rather Sulzery afternoon / evening. The “Bradford Executive” move was specifically to get the Leeds Avoiding Line in (Wortley Curve), as I hadn’t done it before, and that was the only train scheduled that way.

Saturday 25/11/78
After staying overnight with the student nurses in Leeds, it was time to make my (slightly hungover) way home:
46044 1004 Leeds – York

Friday 25/11/88
On my way north to cover some engineering diversions in Scotland; the motive power for this leg of the trip wasn’t especially inspiring, but I had to take it regardless:
86228 2352 Crewe – Mossend
86228 was later one of the class 86s to be exported to Hungary for Floyd, repainted and renumbered 450 007, so there’s still a chance it’ll catch up with me again some day …

Saturday 25/11/95
After an overnight stay in Crewe with my Polish friend Andrzej, we set off to Liverpool to pick up a railtour:
310 106 Crewe – Liverpool Lime Street
We learned the tour was going to be very late, waiting loco, so we did a fill-in move:
508 108 Liverpool Lime Street – New Brighton
508 124 New Brighton – Liverpool Lime Street
71000 0830 Liverpool Lime Street – Watford Junction via Northampton
The railtour eventually departed 2 hours late, due to the late arrival of the “Duke of Gloucester.” There was a pipe band which had been hired to see the train off, but eventually they (too) ran out of puff, packed up, and sidled off. Eventually 71000 arrived, and we got going at last.
For some reason – long since forgotten – I was under strict instructions to be home by a particular time as my then-wife had some time-critical plans for that evening, and I was needed to look after the kids. (Fair enough as I’d just been off cranking for a couple of days). So we alighted from the delayed railtour at Watford Junction and caught an 87 into Euston to save time:
87024 1614 Watford Junction – Euston
43185 + 43144 1705 Paddington – Reading
Duke of Gloucester performed very well on the run up the WCML. I look forward to the day when it returns to traffic (during 2022?).

SATURDAY 26th NOVEMBER 1983:

Having just completed my first week of guard's training at Brighton, I had the weekend off and decided to use a cunning way to visit my friends in Petersfield for the day:

08 20 Brighton-Cardiff: 33 020 Brighton-Chichester (Consist: S3748/3991/3848/13390/34638/4031/4074/3845 Load 8 AB/EH - weekday peak Oxted set)
09 20 Brighton-Plymouth: 33 009 Chichester-Havant (Consist: S18942/4392/3759/13395/34641/4076/3923/3749 Load 8 AB/EH - as above)
10 04 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo: 7849/7834 Havant-Petersfield
20 50 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour: 7405/7057/7408 Petersfield-Havant
22 02 Portsmouth Harbour-Brighton: 3308 Havant-Brighton

Unfortunately neither of the Cromptons were required for haulage - in fact 33 009 was my most prolific one - but it was a fun way to start the day.

40044 Abergele & Pensarn to WBQ, 1J31 19.25 Bangor to Man Vic "The Bangor"

I would have caught the 17.45 Man Vic to Llandudno J from Bank Quay to Abergele to pick up the last run of 044 of the day. It was presumably an ETH Duff.

Take a seat, it's another long one ...

Monday 26/11/79
After a visit to York with my girlfriend, we got up in the wee small hours to go to York station to head south. For once the Gods smiled on me:
40160 0337 York – Kings Cross via Selby, 30’ late.
That evening – and solo this time – I returned to Kings Cross once more to see what was about. What’s on the 2015 Edinburgh? Nothing! Eventually 55007 dropped on, so I boarded and awaited departure. No sooner had we exited Gasworks Tunnel than I knew we were in trouble; the loco would take power then immediately overload, take power / overload, take power / overload, and so it continued. During the booked Stevenage stop, the driver phoned ahead for a replacement loco (although I didn’t know that at the time). We arrived at Peterborough 20 minutes late, having departed from Kings Cross 10 minutes late waiting loco (off repairs?). 55007 was cut off, and replaced by 37084. That’ll do nicely!
55007 2015 Kings Cross – Peterborough, 10’->20’ late.
37084 2142 Peterborough – York via Selby. 30->25’ late.
Once more I returned home to York, and spent the night there, and all the following day, (Tuesday 27/11/79) before coming back to the station during the wee small hours of Wednesday 28/11/79 to head back south. After all, I was supposed to be attending some lectures at university!
(Wednesday 28/11/79)
So I covered some of the southbound services, to see what traction was about. The 2230 Edinburgh – Kings Cross was the heaviest train of the night, so was a good bet for a Deltic. However I noted it was running 45 minutes late … Here it comes: It’s a 40. No, it’s a 37!
37084 0221 York – Kings Cross via Selby
Yes, 37084 again, on load 15 including several sleepers. Apparently, it had worked all the way through to Edinburgh the previous night, sat unused all day on Haymarket. It was then sent back south on the heaviest train of the night, as that was the only one driven by Gateshead crews who signed class 37s, whereas at the time Haymarket crews didn’t. As might be expected, it was a flat out effort all the way – and a bit of a totter. It (eventually) managed to reach a gravity-assisted 90 mph going down Stoke bank, but couldn’t maintain it on the flat. Departing Peterborough there was a prolonged and severe bout of wheelspin trying to get the heavy train moving on the rising gradient over the Nene bridge in the early morning dew. I bet some of the sleeper passengers were thrown out of bed by that treatment! We lost a further 45 minutes to Kings Cross, arriving there 90 minutes late. Epic!

Monday 26/11/84
A quick 87 bash before work:
87013 1045 Glasgow Central – Lockerbie
87011 1250 Lockerbie – Glasgow Central

Saturday 26/11/88
I had come north from Crewe to cover some engineering diversions because of closure of the WCML for bridge replacement works:
37402 0347 Mossend – Glasgow Queen Street via Stirling
First off – after breakfast at least – was the 0715 Glasgow Central – Euston, which was booked to be diverted via Newton on Ayr / Annbank / Mauchline, which was required track. To my surprise instead of the expected ETH 47, there was 47006 on the front:
47006 0715 Glasgow Central – Carlisle via Kilwinning, Newton on Ayr, Annbank, Mauchline
The run back north was a bit more conventional, both in route and traction:
47644 1036 Carlisle – Glasgow Central via Dumfries
Then across to Queen Street to intercept the southbound Clansman at Stirling:
47641 1333 Glasgow Queen Street – Stirling
47619 1426 Stirling – Carlisle via Whifflet North Jn, Rutherglen East Jn, Larkfield Jn., Muirhouse Jn., Dumfries
Another slug of interesting track, avoiding the Glasgow termini. At Dumfries it all came to a (literally) shuddering halt, as one of the brake blocks on the loco had broken, and then become wedged between the brake rigging and the tyre. The loco could go neither back nor fore. During this time the terminating DMU arrived from Carlisle, and blocked the Down platform, as it needed to go through the crossover to return south, so now both roads were entirely at a standstill, and trains began to queue up for miles around. Eventually, after breaking open the emergency tool cabinet in the brake van, and extracting a large crowbar, the offending brake block was removed by brute force, then the brake rigging was tied back, and brakes isolated on that bogie. We came forward at a reduced speed to Carlisle.
Now there’s “sensible things to do” and there’s “ooh, I need that”. My sensible option would have been to stick with this train, and head south to Crewe and home to bed. However, I heard an announcement for any passengers for Newcastle to hurry to join the train in platform …
37509 was waiting there on a rake of 6 air-cons. It was a Carlisle – Polmadie via Craigentinny ECS service which had been purloined to run as a Carlisle to Newcastle local in place of the DMU which was still back of the queue somewhere near Dumfries. That’ll do nicely.
I didn’t need 37509 for haulage – I’d had it previously as 37093. However whilst en route to Newcastle I realised that 37509 / 37093 was the loco which featured in the famous BR commercial, when it was repainted into Police Car livery, and the Newcastle – Carlisle line was the very one it had been shot on, so here I was having the Police 37 over the authentic route:

37509 1815 Carlisle – Newcastle
After all that excitement, it was a slightly less invigorating (but much warmer) ride home:
143 016 Newcastle – Carlisle
(Sunday 27/11/88)
87023 0007 Carlisle – Crewe

Saturday 26/11/94
It’s Rugby season, so the Cardiff Valleys are the place to be:
47816 0921 Reading – Cardiff Central
150 269 Cardiff Central – Ystrad Rhondda
37197 1221 Ystrad Rhondda – Cardiff Central
47781 1355 Cardiff Central – Treherbert
37197 1500 Treherbert – Cardiff Central
37408 1645 Cardiff Central – Cwmbran
158 830 Cwmbran – Newport
37402 1817 Newport – Birmingham New Street via Chepstow, Gloucester, Cheltenham Spa, Lickey, Camp Hill.
47814 2042 Birmingham New Street – Reading via Coventry

I remember seeing the Police Syphon from our front window and thinking 'WTF?!?!?!'.

Anyway, nothing for me to report today.

Some epic tales there from the most travelled enthusiast! I too had the 'ooh I need that' feeling today, I should have gone home on the next Holyhead but I went chasing something. It was erroneously allocated, but it did lead to actually buying a Christmas present from a shop I had no intentions of finding let alone visiting! So it worked out well.

Hopefully the other 'ooh!' train will turn up this evening...

A visit to Crewe Works, and a couple of drags.

47529+(86025) 09:43 Stafford-Crewe
47445+(86025) 14:59 Crewe-Stafford

During our time at Crewe, 86025 back on juice, continued to Manchester or Liverpool and returned with an afternoon train. Another Duff was attached at Crewe for the drag south.

Saturday 27th November 1982

After a break from the Goyles last Saturday for a Hoover bash, it's back to the Midlands with the gaps as usual filled by Cans.

87021 Crewe to Birmingham NS
31412 Birmingham NS to Leicester
31272 Leicester to Birmingham NS
31407 Birmingham NS to Leicester
31414 Leicester to Birmingham NS
85034 Birmingham NS to Wolves
87021 Crewe to WBQ

I required 272 and the Roarer. And indeed 87021 which was my penultimate for haulage. It took six more months to get the last one.

Next Saturday is a little different.

Sunday 27th November 1988

Back to Oxford after Graduation. I didn't return to Wolves for ten years or so after this.

86411 Wolves to Birmingham NS
47657 Birmingham NS to Oxford

Both required!

There was a 40 on the 1630 Kings Cross – Peterborough, so it had to be done:
40057 1630 Kings Cross – Peterborough
40057 was running well, and a 4 minute late start was converted into a 3 minute early arrival at Peterborough. There it wasn’t (usually) too long to wait for the 1630 Hull – Kings Cross, with a Deltic. On this occasion it was announced as running 25 minutes late. As it approached the station I could see it wasn’t a Deltic, the marker lights were too high. Damn, it’s a 31/4. No wonder it’s late. But what’s that dubbing noise, and why is there a big headlight in the middle of the cab front?
50038 1854 Peterborough – Kings Cross
Wow! Apparently 55015 had expired at Goole on the 1205 Kings Cross – Hull, so 50038 – which was in the area on driver training for Doncaster drivers – rescued it and worked through to Hull, then onto the 1630 Hull – Kings Cross throughout. We lost a further 20 minutes to Kings Cross, being looped for HSTs to overtake, although I did clock it at 103 mph through New Southgate. At Kings Cross the Doncaster driver was asked if he was willing to work back with the 2215 (Sleepers Only) to Edinburgh as far as Doncaster, but he declined as he was already on long hours. Fortunately another Doncaster driver who signed class 50s was available to work back north, so he duly worked it. I wasn’t able to do the train myself (to my lasting regret), but I was able to let a mate know, and he had it back to Doncaster, where it re-engined for a Deltic through to Edinburgh. Crazy!

That is totally outrageous. Beyond dreadful. And then working back north on sleepers. Crazy.

Another case of being in the right place at the right time.

Agreed! A 50 along the ECML sounds insane, one way to make the relatively boring line more exciting!

To be honest it wasn't the most exciting run, as we spent a lot of time running slow line dodging in and out between HSTs. However as an event it was epic. Total fluke on my part.
I did later have 50s on XC service trains south from York and Leeds, but just imagine having one all the way from Hull to Kings Cross... I wish!

Nothing for me to report today.

I was thinking of going out for the two TPE 68 turns this afternoon, but decided not to bother. Checking RTT they are numbers 19 and 25 - both required! Hopefully they'll both produce again next Saturday when I am definitely out.

Meanwhile, here's what I (probably) scratched last Saturday...

45212.jpg

And here's something I saw a few weeks ago during a trip to North Wales...

67008.jpg

I've only had 4 67s, but I'm not especially fussed so I was happy just to take a phot.

Yeah, not the best of days for some random loco bashing trips ...

Meanwhile, here's the next (short) instalment from me:

Wednesday 28/11/84
Another pre-work bash, this time to pick up 40122 on the Edinburgh – Dundee circuit:
47705 0800 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Falkirk High
40122 0918 Edinburgh – Dundee
40122 1128 Dundee – Edinburgh
47706 1330 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High

Thursday 28/11/85
A post-work bash this time:
37178 1715 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Falkirk High
27004 1815 Edinburgh – Ladybank
27014 1859 Ladybank – Edinburgh
47715 2100 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High

Wednesday 28/11/90
Arriving back in Reading after a 12-hour shift in Paddington, I was surprised to see a 33/1 + 4TC on the Reading – Basingstoke shuttle. Well, it would be rude to refuse it:
33101 2150 Reading – Basingstoke
33101 2240 Basingstoke – Reading

To my eternal shame I have never ridden behind 40122 (and maybe never will now). I was late shift on 28/11/84 so could have managed it, for a short run from Edinburgh at least. Oh well....

Apologies for a small date slippage once again, but here goes:

FRIDAY 26th NOVEMBER 1976:

A day trip to Blackpool for a wet and windy tramway bash:

04 30 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo: 7737/7423 Petersfield-Woking via Aldershot (diverted due to points failure at Woking Junction)
06 04 Farnham/05 58 Basingstoke-Waterloo: 7834/7702 Woking-Waterloo
Northern Line: Waterloo-Euston
07 45 Euston-Glasgow Central: 87 018 Euston-Preston (Euston-Crewe in 112 minutes - average speed 84.7 mph)
09 45 Manchester Victoria-Blackpool North: 47 468 Preston-Blackpool North
15 04 Blackpool South-Kirkham & Wesham: M50970/56264
15 19 Blackpool North-Euston: 47 445 Kirkham & W-Preston, 86 259 Preston-Euston.
Northern Line: Euston-Waterloo
19 50 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour: 7340/7054/7356 Waterloo-Petersfield

Meanwhile, back to today's date:

TUESDAY 28th NOVEMBER 1978:

Another after work Crompton bash:

06 23 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo: 7712/7717/7813 Petersfield-Waterloo
08 08 Waterloo-Woking: 7143/7142 Waterloo-Wimbledon (Two Ramsgate CEPs!....must have been working their way towards Eastleigh for overhaul)
16 29 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo: 7052/7833 Wimbledon-Waterloo (unusual to have a buffet unit on a Pompey stopper, but diagrammed as below)
19 00 Waterloo-Exeter St David's: 33 014 Waterloo-Woking (Consist: W5435/5482/5495/14079/14063/1755/5246/5247 Load 8 AB/EH)
19 20 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour: 7833/7052 Woking-Petersfield

SATURDAY 28th NOVEMBER 1981:

I don't normally post unit-only days, but this was something exceptional. Major engineering works all weekend for the renewal of Hyndland East Junction involved alterations to the Glasgow North electric services. Trains from the East and the Argyle Line terminated at Partick and then reversed either in Hyndland Loop or the depot. Trains from the West ran in a circular fashion from the Singer to the Yoker line, or vice-versa, via the Jordanhill curve (Hyndland West Jn-Hyndland North Jn) and the Milngavie branch was served by a half hourly DMU shuttle to/from Queen Street High Level via Maryhill Park. Having spent the previous night at my parents' place near Garelochhead, I decided to have a slice of the action:

Bus: Garelochhead-Helensburgh Central
09 07 Helensburgh Central-Anniesland (then back via Yoker): 303 013/061 Helensburgh Central-Westerton via Singer
Walk along the canal to Dawsholm Park and back, snatching some food for lunch.
12 23 Milngavie-Glasgow QS HL: SC51456/59555/51520/52000/59785/52036 Westerton-Glasgow QS HL
14 22 Glasgow QS HL-Milngavie: SC52011/59027/50820/51803/59560/51796 Glasgow QS HL-Westerton
16 43 Westerton-Balloch Central: 303 036 Westerton-Anniesland
Walk Anniesland-Hyndland, grabbing some photos of the engineering trains from the park at Jordanhill.

I could have had a DMU ride to Milngavie and back, but the main aim of the trip was to see the Maryhill line from the front in both directions. I had done the Jordanhill West curve more than once in the past on both diverted EMUs and diverted West Highland trains.

Now I have this down as a WCML diesel drag day between Preston and Crewe, but can find no reference to it on railgen archive or anywhere else online so am wondering if it is a figment of my imagination!!! Anyway this is what I have recorded

108 unit Barrow In Furness - Lancaster
EMU Lancaster - Preston
31127 dragging an EMU Preston - Wigan North Western
31322 dragging 86422 Wigan North Western - Preston
31461 dragging 87014 Preston - Wigan North Western
47306 dragging 87031 Wigan North Western - Preston
108 Unit Preston - Barrow In Furness

At some point I may have gone to see either Wigan Athletic or Preston North End but no record of either. Anyone else out on these OTDIH?

I have been on an 8VEP+2HAP formation dragged by a 33/1 over the then non-electrified Portsmouth-Southampton line back in the 'seventies, on an emergency stand-in for part of a loco-hauled ADEX. Full details a considerable way upthread, but I haven't got time to find it right now.

37411 1650 Glasgow Queen Street – Crianlarich
37407 1910 Crianlarich – Glasgow Queen Street

The 2038 Queen Street – Perth was 30 minutes late start, waiting loco, then stood a further 30 minutes at Larbert with the brakes seized hard on. Meanwhile, we passed the 1850 Dyce – Queen Street failed at Polmaise, and when we did reach Stirling we crossed the 1630 Inverness – Edinburgh with two class 47s on the front, also following an earlier failure. Not a good day for class 47 reliability!

SUNDAY 29th NOVEMBER 1981:

At this time the prototype APT-P units based at Polmadie were running an unadvertised return trip from Glasgow Central to Euston and return Monday-Friday. IIRC, this departed Glasgow at about 08 50 and returned from Euston at 16 32, calling only at Preston in each direction and taking four and a half hours for the journey. This was primarily for staff familiarisation and training, although I think that any passengers holding open tickets who arrived early for the 09 10 ex-Glasgow or 16 45 ex-Euston could travel on them. This particular week, I and a few colleagues from the Scottish Region Train Planning Office were invited to travel first class on the Monday's 16 32 ex-Euston, complete with a free three course dinner, and were given Glasgow-London office passes on the Friday afternoon, to be handed-in on arrival back at work on the Tuesday morning. I decided to travel up to London on the Sunday - rather than take the 07 10 from Glasgow on the Monday morning - as WCML trains were being diverted by both the G&SW and S&C lines. I was able to stay overnight with my then girlfriend in the London area:

09 58 Partick-High Street: 303 005 Partick-Glasgow QS LL
10 40 Glasgow Central-Euston: 47 483 Glasgow C-Preston via Dumfries, Appleby and Clitheroe, 86 243 Preston-Euston

Consist of 10 40 Glasgow-Euston: M5979/6011/12077/12102/12159/10019/3318/11035/11042/81061 Load 10 AB/EH (Reverse formation from Preston)

British Thompson Houston Type 1 800 bhp diesel-electric loco - TOPS class 15 - allocated to Finsbury Park and Stratford Depots. Used mainly on North London and cross-London freight trips, often in pairs. The first time I saw one it was entering King's Cross with ECS from Ferme Park Sidings. The last four examples - including the one in the photo - were renumbered into the Departmental series (DB986xxx, IIRC) and used as stationary carriage heating units at Thornton Field CS.
