Yes I passed. But I came out the track so much I was sure I'd failed. The loud buzzing in my ears when I did come off the track was very irritating.

Yes. There are about 20 images to go through. And the list of things you are looking for never changes. I believe the items are traffic lights, traffic sign, pedestrians, motorcycles, cars. There may be a couple more I've forgotten. But its always the same list for each picture. The pictures will be traffic scenes such as a crossroads or a busy road junction etc. It's honestly not as bad as it sounds. Just remember to only click what you saw. Do not guess. You will also get a practice go before hand.

Also worth remembering that the maze never changes shape. It's always the same. You guide the ball from point A to point B. When you get to point B the track dissappears and you will be instructed to go back to point A. When you do so, the exact same track will reappear again and you guide the ball to point B. Then you keep repeating about 20 times or so. It's my belief that what they are looking for is an improvement in both speed and accuracy, however slight. And also how quickly you can recover when you make mistakes. This is only my assumption though so don't take it as gospel.

Anything else you need just ask.
Thanks for this puts my mind a little more at ease. I’ve done a few practice ones there’s a video on YouTube and it went okay. Probably just overthinking everything. I went into the paper ones without reading too much into it and just did it on the day and passed those but now it’s so close I’m more nervous!

What’s the SJE and MMI like?

What’s the SJE and MMI like?

You get plenty of time to write examples to each of the questions they ask. I.e A time you dealt with extreme pressure? Then they ask you further questions about the example you gave. The actual MMI will be different for everyone as it all depends on what you write down. The only advice I can give is to give legitimate examples only. If you make up answers it'll be harder to make stuff up when you are questioned about them. If you speak about real experiences your answers will flow more naturally, and this will show.

I'm currently waiting for a DMI so if you have any advice on that, or the questions you was asked I would very much appreciate it.

That's good then because I'm very fortunate to have been in a job where I have an example for everything, time will be on my side there!

The DMI was daunting! First of all they ask you about yourself and your employment history, then they asked what I know about Northern and why I wanted to be a train driver. What I thought the role of a train driver was etc. Then there was what felt like 8/9 tell me about a time questions.. ones I can remember were;

- Name a time you've dealt with a colleague who has a different approach to you
- Name a time you've communicated clearly in an emergency situation
- Name a time you've had to work by yourself and maintain concentration
- Name a time you had to prioritise a different task
- Name a time you've been given a project, why was it important

With those questions as well there was lots of mini questions in them so it made thinking of an example on the spot even harder. It seemed to go on and on forever, I even quoted the wrong CEO of the company but that was Wikipedias fault so I just said some more facts and joked they're from Wiki too so they're probably wrong.

Just be yourself, I was dropping little jokes for the tell me about yourself bit just to ease tension a little bit and it seemed to work.

Thanks for your help. Those are some interesting questions. "Name a time you was given a project" especially. Not sure what I'd say to that.

Gives me something to think about at least.
Thanks

I know it might been posted before but it’s an absolute minefield; has anyone who has actually completed and passed the tests used a one stop shop beyond the pack sent out by the toc to practice?

I know there is paid ones out there but when you go on them they’re actually not that great.

There must be a one stop shop for it all that’s relevant and decent

Thanks in advance

There's no need to pay for anything. The pack the TOC sends is all you need.

Good luck

If you really want the OPC has some stuff on their website you can pay for but it’s not worth it my opinion.

Not worth it in my opinion just general research if it’s something you want you will gather the knowledge and spend the time to research the TOC as well as what is required for the position you’re applying for and adapt your current skills to the environment and requirements

Just the pack that was sent out before the assessment centre was all I used. I think a lot of people over think the difficulty of the tests. Remember the tests are designed for a certain type of person that is suitable for the role. If you follow all the instructions to the letter and are slightly mechanically and logically minded you should be fine, there is nothing inherently difficult about the tests, they are just picking out the correct shapes/patterns listening and counting sounds and following the instructions.

Most purchasable practice materials will have a solid description of what content is in them and if you think they’ll benefit you then it’s a relatively small investment for a potentially huge reward… if they help even a little bit then in my view it’s probably worth it

That being said I do agree that there’s a tendency to overthink the assessments and I was definitely guilty of it myself. It’s understandable.

If you break each stage/ assessment down and make sure you have the day off/ good rest the night before that’s probably going to help more than anything.

I’d say group bourdon is worth a practice prior to the test and maybe the traffic perception test if applicable, just to get you used to seeing the images prior to the day

Trial runs are usually given before each assessment too

All the best

Hi all, I’ve got my test coming up soon, I’ve already sat the psychometric test once but failed on the TRP part 1. Just posting to see if anyone has any tips or practice ideas for this as there isn’t much out there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats and good luck during the rest of the process!
Would you be able to share a few tips on passing the MMI, as that's the one I failed on my previous attempt. Maybe some practice material that has helped you out? Appreciate it, thanks.
MMI is about your personal experience, situations where you can demonstrate the skills needed for the role. Think about what skills are required for the role and then write down/talk in your answers on where you have demonstrated those skills.

I would contact them for clarification of whether or not you will be sitting the additional test.

That’s the test at stage 1. If successfully you go to stage 2 where you’ll to the remaining tests, including trp1/2

Hey guys completely new here. I just received an invite to complete my SCAAT test for a conductor role with TFW. Just wondering if anyone knows of any good resources to practise with and if anyone could let me know what to expect throughout this process

Hi, I recently completed Scaat. Can’t really say that there is practice material out there. I found it pretty straightforward and easy. You get shapes and you have to select the right shapes. Its similar to group bourden test and you get shapes like <,[,|,\ C,v and you will be told to mark this shape | out of them. Its timed so make sure you are quick and precise.Three stages the last one is a bit hard and first too are easy. Good luck hope this helps

As far as I know it's standardised so all the tests are the same.

I know people at work have applied twice and both times they said the tests were the same

But the test I sat with Avanti with GLOP didn't have as many questions or sentences as a guy I work with that applied with Arriva

No. This test is to see if you can remember information you’ve just heard and read. It’s a test of short term memory. If you fail and need to re-sit the test you get a different passage of text about a train’s braking system.

Hi all
I have my psychometric test next week.
Does anyone have any advice on where to get some good practice materials.
Have been practicing in the booklet I recieved but do not want to keep going over the same tests again and again have looked online and there seems to be some you can pay for is this worth doing or am I wasting money.
Also any tips for the day
Thanks for any help

Definitely would not pay for extra, I get your concerns if its your first psychometric assessment but personally, I found that the revision you get given is sufficient.

Hi all,

Random question but I have a pre employment medical at Go Ahead House, but I currently have a knee sprain. The email says it takes place on 4th floor, does anyone know if there is a lift?

Obviously not ideal having a medical injured, but it’s easing off so won’t be an issue going forward.

Also anyone know how long after the medical you get the contract etc?

Thanks

There is a lift. The staff up there are really nice to deal with doing medicals :)

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

I'm due to have a medical at some point in the future for a trainee driver role and looking for some guidance around blood pressure and BMI. I have searched previous posts but can't find anything definitive.

I have suffered with white coat syndrome when having blood pressure taken at the doctor's previously, but at home it's lower and usually around the 131/89 mark. Can anyone tell me if this is within acceptable limits?

Also, i've seen for new starters on another thread (not sure if it's TOC specific?) BMI must be 28 or lower? I'm currently 29 so wondering if I need to lose a bit more timber!

Thanks in advance for any responses.
