Having failed to get to Kilmalcolm two weeks previously, today I managed to travel the branch, although it nearly never happened, with Class 40s dominating the day on Aberdeen services. The day finished with what transpired to be my last run with Deltic 6. It was removed at Peterborough with boiler failure, within the week it had been withdrawn.

The 31 had just replaced Deltic 6 after it had a boiler failure. At least it was required and was a lot warmer!

My plan for the day was to travel overnight to Edinburgh and return with 0950 Edinburgh-Plymouth, hopefully by Deltic. Arrival into Edinburgh at 4-o’clock in the morning isn’t the most welcoming experience, however 40065 was waiting to take me across to Glasgow to help me fill in the small hours. I returned to Edinburgh and had time for a short return trip to Drem before heading back to York.

Between October 1978 and October 1980 I worked for BR at Harlow Town, and had most if not all of the MR 31s and 37s during that time. But, of course, I no longer have my records from then. Wonderful times, thanks for bringing back great memories.

A little bit of Gronk bashing today. During the Winter timetable the Newcastle-Poole had a portion attached at Sheffield. After arrival at Sheffield the Leeds portion would be drawn back into the tunnel by the 08 and shunted onto the back of the Newcastle train. I cannot now remember why I wanted to travel to Bristol with a Class 45.

Thursday 5th February 1981

I had found out that Deltic 6 was scheduled to be withdrawn imminently so I decided to take annual leave and try and get a final run. The last reports were that it was in Edinburgh so after covering the evening York/Hull stoppers I decided to head back to York to cover the southbound overnights to KX.

Whilst waiting in York, hopefully get a final run with DelticI 6 I found out that it hadn’t been allocated to any of the overnight trains. The next best option was to pick up the 0550 KX-Aberdeen and try my luck in Edinburgh. However on the journey north I noted No 6 on Gateshead so the chances of having a final run with it were low. It had actually run light engine from Haymarket. It would work one more train, an ECS to York before it’s withdrawal. I continued to Edinburgh where I was very pleased to see Deltic 7 waiting to re-engine the train to Aberdeen. Although I missed out with No.6 I ended up having a very good Finsbury Park Day.

I cannot now remember but I must have received some’Gen’ that 50039 was working out of Paddington. This was my penultimate 50 for haulage, so today I had a day off from Deltics. On my return I decided to take 40058 to York which would get me home before midnight. The alternative would be to wait for a possible Deltic but arrive back in the small hours of Sunday, something I didn’t want to do because a had a prior engagement for Sunday.

Due to a signalling error the down Midnight 1C99 hauled by 47811 had been sent along the Avon valley and was stuck at Bathampton junction with a full engineering block ahead of it. The Up (1A99) was put into Frome loop and stopped in the platform. 47846 was then detatched and ran light to Bathampton junction to haul the stranded train back to Westbury. 47846 then took 1C99 forward to Penzance, while 47811 ran light to Frome to take 1A99 to Paddington 2 hours late.

An early Sunday morning start for me and the destination - Normanton? I was heading for the Normanton Model Railway Event; an even more unlikely destination for me as I have little interest in modelling. I had however joined the fledgling Class 40 Preservation Society and they had a sales stand at the event. I had agreed to help out, sacrificing a day otherwise spent chasing Deltics.

I found myself at Peterborough shortly after midnight with options running out so I had to take a steam heat 47 north. I wanted to get to KX to cover the 0550 Aberdeen (1S12) service so I took 40078 back south. IIRC I should have had a 10 minute connection at KX. For whatever reason 40078 was late into the Cross and I missed 1S12 which was 55006. Just over 2 hours to wait for the next service north!

You may wonder how Deltic 11 worked two southbound trains on the same day. After arrival at KX with the 1020 from Newcastle it returned north with the 1608 to York. It then replaced 47550 which had worked the 1700 from Edinburgh.

I agree and I’m struggling to think of other towns that have lost an Inter City style of service.

Going back a while:

St Albans, Grimsby / Cleethorpes, Barrow, and a whole plethora of places west of Shrewsbury, for example.

Much more recently, Slough; also the good folk of Wellingborough and Corby have a shout.

A lot of no heat haulage for a February!

....but Skipton, Keighley and Halifax have since regained inter-city services courtesy of LNER (ex-GNER) and Grand Central.

My bold. Including of course East Croydon. We even got the Vomet Comets for a while and then Cross Country got simplified (?).

This lead me to recall there was also Cross Country out to Dover - suppose that would have served Bromley South ?. I got on one at Tonbridge.

Margate, Ramsgate, Folkestone Central also spring to mind...
