If that was the case, in a match that that particular one that has so much "history", that person should not have been appointed to officiate.

Yes, you’d think so.

But the problem in Scotland is that the whole football environment is so dominated by Rangers and Celtic that pretty much every person involved in Scottish football from the CEO of the SFA down to the tea lady at the Civil Service Strollers is either a direct fan of one of the Old Firm, or has an allegiance whilst being a fan of another team

If you don’t appoint refs in that category you’re picking from a very small pool of refs who may just not be good enough

A Rangers fan refereeing this fixture is not a new thing; it goes back years. Beaton today, Bobby Madden, Mike McCurry, Hugh Dallas, Tiny Wharton... it's a long list.

Harry's nearly out of his misery, Bayern Munich lost away to Heidenheim and Bayer Leverkusen won at Union Berlin, meaning they are 16 points behind with only 6 games left.
Tuesdays Champions League game @ Arsenal takes on even more importance to them.

I think it was John Hughes who suggested that referees didn't declare allegiances in Scottish football as no one would be able to referee the Old Firm: is it true that referees don't have to officially declare clubs they support in Scotland (they do so in England, don't they?)

I recall Tipton-based referee Paul Rejer needed to be called in at short notice to officiate a West Bromwich Albion game. I'm not sure if it was due to being a WBA fan or the fact that he lived less than 5 miles from the ground but West Brom's opponents had to be informed beforehand. Got to be talking late 90s or early 00s.

I have seen pictures of the Shay on social media today. It looks like a bog. Awful.

Yep. And we’re playing on it Wednesday evening, Saturday afternoon, and next Tuesday evening.

The football club are blaming the council and the weather, the council are blaming the weather and the government. The rugby club say it’s nice for the fat lads to roll around in mud and water

Nothing wrong with us fat lads having a mud wrestle on a Saturday afternoon, makes up for all the running round the pitches on a Tuesday night, doing 10 press ups everytime you drop the ball.

the fat lads were having a good roll about in the mud in the clips I saw. Would have suited hippos! No way that pitch is going to properly playable any time soon!

We share the egg chasers ground but the terms of our lease mean they are only rarely allowed to play on thier own pitch. When they do it is just churned up. Our egg chasers are of the 15 man posho variety not your 13 man working mans version!

Is it not the case that the highest non-league tiers have to have a playing surface suitable for that level of football?
i don't think there are any surface quality rules. I have seen us play on some terrible pitches over the last few years. The rules are much more focussed on ground grading.

Rule 23.2 in the National League 2023/24 handbook still states that each member Club... "must ensure that adequate arrangements are in place to maintain its pitch in good order..."

Possibly this is a directive more honoured in the breach than the observance?!

When considering the travails of Truro and Taunton in this regard it would appear to be so.

When the club doesn’t own their ground and therefore doesn’t have any control at all over the maintenance of the pitch, I’m not sure how that rule can be fairly enforced

Certainly tricky. National League rules do, however, state that a member club is responsible for maintenance of its pitch. Ultimate sanction would perhaps be for a club to have its membership withdrawn!

I would take that to mean that there should be appointed ground staff to carry out maintenance. Doing something about improving drainage for exceptional weather conditions is another matter entirely.

I was of the 15 man variety as well, playing for firstly Surrey Police then Esher then Woking. All very white & middle class.
I wasn't even a Copper, but my Wife was.
I used to love all the comments - look at him typical Copper (I'm 6 feet 7 and built like a brick Outhouse) I took my fare share of 'slaps' but normally came out even.

We'd normally have several pints of Shandy with the opposition after the game and go home as best of mates, till the next time.

Everton have been hit really hard for their latest financial misdemeanours, with a 2 point deduction. They have already said that they are going to appeal.

So that is Nottm For and Everton (again) appealing these decisions. They need to get on with the hearings for the sake of all concerned otherwise the end of the EPL season will descend into a farce.

Sounds reasonable to me. Everton were fined 6 pts for breaches over 3 years, so 2 more pts for the 4th year seems pro rata.

Even though, in the Nottingham Forest case, it was established that 6 points is the starting point for a single offence? Everton have been given a 2 point ‘discount’ for a second offence which rather goes against natural justice.

Liverpool fans have said there will be no flags on The Kop tonight as a protest against the clubs 2% price increase on next years season tickets!
2% doesn't seem very much to me, I'm sure most other clubs will be much higher.

An excellent 2 nights of Champions League matches has seen the following results from the First Leg:

Arsenal 2 - Bayern Munich 2
Real Madrid 3 - Manchester City 3
Paris Saint Germain 2 - Barcelona 3
Athletico Madrid 2 - Borussia Dortmund 1.

Rangers have strongly condemned the postponement for a third time of their match at Dundee, another attempt will be made to play next week which also delays the Split.

Halifax Town have announced that their next 2 home games will be played at Accrington due to pitch issues.

Tonight is the Europa & Conference League First Leg with West Ham having arguably the toughest game away at Bayer Leverkusen.

Indeed

The twice-postponed home game against Oldham is still unscheduled, but realistically can only be next Thursday, but they Shay won't be usable and as yet no other ground has been identified

Another planet...
Was Accrington really the nearest suitable venue? I'd have thought somewhere like Valley Parade (Bradford) or Spotland (Rochdale) would be more convenient for supporters... there's even Huddersfield, as nothing that could be described as football is being played there at the moment! Even the Tetley's Stadium (Dewsbury RLFC) would be easier than Accrington.

Money might have played a part in going to Accrington. Are they even charging for the use of the stadium?

Does Dewsbury meet the required standards (the ability to segregate, for example)?

I am a die-hard Liverpool fan who has been on the season ticket waiting list for 18 years. I strongly disagree with this protest.

If you cannot afford a 2% (£20) price increase you should be asking yourself if you can afford a £1000 season ticket

26 miles to Accrington so not *that* far. There were other clubs (as yet unnamed) who offered but all were rejected by the police apparently

They will get paid some sort of hire fee (which Halifax will recharge to Calderdale Council - let’s see how that pans out) plus obviously their costs

Correct. It being Oldham (the other two are Barnet and Ebbsfleet) that seems to be the sticking point

A really simple equation for Darlo now: Win on Saturday and we are safe. To be in that postion is a testament to the great work Streve Watson and his assisntant Terry Mitchell have done since they came in early in january. At one point we were 12 points adrift!

Just don't cock it up now - i dont want to go to Chester on the last day of the season needing something.
