End of the Royal Train: alternative uses and what might have been

If it hasn’t been suggested before, how about keeping a selection of carriages and a loco at Leith waterfront close to RY Britannia? It would need to be housed in a dedicated building to protect it from salt air corrosion. All subject to an available site and finance of course!

    What made you happy today?

The radio in my old Land Rover suddenly burst into life yesterday after not working for the last two or three years. It was a very pleasant and unexpected if loud surprise when driving to work!

    Not exceeding 40 shillings

A good observation Chris about the transport type font and which therefore dates my BR(S) example to circa 1963/64. Meanwhile I’ve just come across this British Transport Commission example which is currently up for auction with GWRA. I imagine it’s either late ‘40s / early-mid ‘50s

    Not exceeding 40 shillings

An interesting topic. These two SECR and BR signs in the 32475 Collection dating from 1901 and 1950s demonstrate just how long the 40 shilling fine perpetrated.

    Dual–Named Stations?

I have three BR(S) totem examples in Kent which have since been shortened: Snowdown & Nonington (now Snowdown) Sittingbourne and Milton Regis (now Sittingbourne) Whitstable & Tankerton (now Whitstable)

Trivia – The smallest harbour had harbour railway?

Portsoy had a short branch off the GNSR line down to the quay. Apparently the branch was so short and steep that it only operated one wagon at a time.

    Walking and Rambling discussion

I noticed today that the England Coast Path appears to have been rebranded the King Charles III England Coast Path. Is this a belated April Fool’s thing or a case of toadying of the worst kind? No I’m not anti monarchy per se but is this sort of thing really necessary or somebody wanting...

    Brighton Belle On Test 28/01/25

Sadly not 1741549586 Being an EMU with no locomotive requirement for haulage in third rail territory I would imagine Brighton being an ideal and at least semi regular destination. Also with just 5 coaches (I’ve read of possibly 6 in the future) it’s not going to take up too much platform space.

A short history of English Waymarks

Inspired by this thread I’ve started photographing footpath markers and stickers on recent walks around my neck of the woods in East Kent. Here’s just a few for variety……

    Brighton Belle On Test 28/01/25

An article in the March edition of Railway Magazine says it is thought that the first testing of the unit under third rail power will take place on the Merseyrail network. Also that a fifth coach will be added before entering traffic.

A short history of English Waymarks

Finger posts and direction signs are an endlessly top subject in my book and I’m always on the lookout for interesting and unusual examples. Only yesterday and before I read this thread I photographed a byway sign along with the rather beautiful path itself. The graphics are rather absurd...

    Walking and Rambling discussion

Hi Kite159. Given the time of year eg cold and wet I have to say the path is generally pretty good. In Hythe it’s paved, some of it is farm track but all very walkable and flat as a pancake as you would expect. The only tricky bit of path is a narrow sloped surface for half a mile I think near...
