Tesco to increase its use of rail freight

All the retailers with DCs in Scotland use Rail. Some directly like Tesco and Asda, other indirectly through other shippers. Not everything is exactly what it says on the tin.

Train interfered with leading to wagon derailment 10/10/21

This was the site of a trespass fatality a few years ago, person climbed on top of a stabled train. I presume the defences still allow access. Wonder what the repercussions would have been for NR/FOC if a more serious incident had occurred. A runaway is serious enough.

    Freight Trains versus HGVs

You make some valid points, and I would comment as follows - 1) This is valid. The railway success is not well known, however a large amount of retailer logistics is done by 3PL - often in retailer livery. 2) Utilisation of trucks needs to increase. One way to do this is to use on local work...

    Freight Trains versus HGVs

I consider this to be a really interesting debate, but I think the challenge is summed up in the thread title. It is not as straightforward as road versus rail. Logistics operations can best serve the market through a combination of road and rail, for it will be a while until every retail unit...

What happens if Network Rail have a yard and this sort of thing happens?

DB Cargo guilty of safety breach at Tyne Yard leading to life changing injuries for 13 year old

This is a sad incident. Unfortunately it's one of many up and down every year, the majority I believe occurring on the mainline. Following an incident in Wakefield in 2016 I read that there was no obligation for warning signs, the ORR only suggested installing them after the incident.

Sorry, it should have read over 1 death per week.

    Incident at Loughborough Junction (18/06)

Sorry, it is over 1 death per week. I was going to write over 50 per year and changed my mind. Updated the original post now.

    Incident at Loughborough Junction (18/06)

This is indeed another tragic event on our railways and unfortunately we know it won't be the last. Probably 100s of trespassers on our network every week, seen or unseen. Risk taking, adventure, unwitting or known will continue. No amount of fencing will prevent trespass completely, the human...

    Incident at Loughborough Junction (18/06)

Another tragic death on the railway. Possibly not hit by a train if that is DC third rail area?

Trespassers mindset and ways to change that.

I'm unclear on what proportionate response actually means. There are clearly open access point at stations, but if a barrier (fenceline etc) and other deterrents don't physically stop a trespasser then does that mean that the railway is not preventing trespass? If there is a small fence or wall...
