Disused railways reinstatement or walking cycling routes

Bristol to bath is very well surfaced, wide tarmac at the Bristol end. I think east of Bitton some of it is that clay gravel stuff, but still decent. Miles better than the swampy path along the Avon Gorgw which must see very limited commuting traffic.

Disused railways reinstatement or walking cycling routes

That has been claimed, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s true. I had a training course up in Downend today so decided I would cycle there from west Bristol, using the railway path for some of the journey. I undertook a non-scientific survey, counting how many people I passed travelling...

    GCR Bridge Project

No reason it would have to be on the southern section I guess! How about covering the end of the southern three sidings at Ruddington?

    Princetown Railway Preservation

The scenery is quite spectacular on that route, I remember when walking some of it in the 80s thinking it would make a decent narrow gauge line. But I don’t think the climate for starting preserved lines is very good these days, many small projects not really getting anywhere and a declining...

'Higher Speed' Lines by bypassing slow sections with new track

I only meant for use as a realignment of Westerleigh Jn, so using the northern end of the part that is still there, then curving west towards Parkway. The current mainline from Yate curves slightly towards the east before the Junction.

'Higher Speed' Lines by bypassing slow sections with new track

Could the Midland line be used as part of the realignment? It heads south from Yate in a better direction than the current mainline, a chance to create something which would allow for higher speeds. Is the formation of the east-facing curve intact? I can’t tell if there is a road built on it...

    Huddersfield Vintage Posters

Is that a class 210 on the final one, or an electric unit of similar styling?

WCRC loses judicial review in High Court

Maybe someone can buy them all and stick them in a field in North Yorkshire to rot for a decade before scrapping them?

GBRF confirms conversion of Class 56s to Class 69s

i was going to ask if they’d done large logo blue yet, then saw the photo of 69002 which confirms they did. That’s a good one historically as 56036 was the first loco to carry this livery back in the day (with the yellow cabsides, think there was a class 47 just with the big double arrows much...

    Sighting help

No, I was definitely thinking of 33s. According to http://www.scot-rail.co.uk/page/class+33# : Aberdeen did pop in my head when I first thought I could recall something. Would they have been similar enough for class 26/27 drivers to have found some familiarity when operating them?

    Sighting help

Didn’t some of the 33s work up in Scotland towards the end of their lives? Thought there were a few in Dutch livery working there.

Use of mk2 air-con stock on steam railtours

For me, the true vintage feel (and I wasn’t even alive during the steam era) would need to be compartment stock with side corridor, not sure if anyone even runs that these days? Memories of the whole family (and friends) crammed into one compartment going down to Teignmouth for the day, buckets...

Sites for Labour's New Towns that already have rail connections

Pilning/Severn Beach area could be ideal for new town, rail connections, motorway connections, high housing demand locally, access to Bristol and South Wales. I think a lot around there is green belt, but it’s pretty boring green belt, not exactly the Yorkshire Dales, and further west is a lot...

Heysham Port line new stations/improvement potential

Quite a bit of the material for Hinkley has been taken by rail to Avonmouth and from there by coastal shipping to Hinkley. I suspect if there was a railhead close enough it would have gone all the way rather than having to transfer mode en route. For the scale of the project I’m surprised they...

Train Leasing Profits Treble, £400,000,000 dividends

Suspect they’ve made quite a few bob weighing in old (and not so old) trains at Newport, what are scrap prices like these days?
