Why is Amersham to Chalfont & Latimer so ridiculously expensive?

I expect because most people will be using Oyster or a contactless card, for which the fare is only £2.00 from Amersham to Chalfont & Latimer. It seems to be a recurring theme in TfL areas that paper fares are more expensive to dissuade usage.

What are the widest and narrowest station platforms?

Probably not the widest, but the centre platforms at Pitsea struck me as particularly wide last time I passed through. Ewell West is also similar to Gargrave as mentioned by @Tetchytyke, with the platforms narrowing under the road bridge.
