    West Yorkshire To Glasgow

Having checked the archive, direct trains from Leeds in 1980 took about 4 hours, which is the same as the OP's journey from Huddersfield today, so exta time would have been needed for travel to Leeds and changing. That's similar to today's journey times, albeit with a change, but you have at...

    West Yorkshire To Glasgow

You would still have to change once from Huddersfield. From Leeds, you have an hourly service to Preston with hourly connections to Glasgow or an hourly Cross Country with connections at Edinburgh. This is quicker and more frequent than the long-gone service via the S&C.

    Notice of intended prosecution

Sorry if I'm being a bit dim, but what is the legal problem with purchasing a ticket after starting your journey? I have always understood that the bye laws require you to hand over a ticket when requested and that the Regulation of Railways Act has two relevant parts: (i) When you are asked...

Trivia: Level crossings with no pedestrian access while they're down

There are loads of places like this. I was on a train at Feniton once that was several minutes early and sat with its tail end blocking the crossing, while helpless prospective passengers waited on the opposite side.

Trainee train driver - leaving for another job during recruitment process?

Right now what you actually have is a job and an offer of another job, and nothing more. It may well be that you have seen off many rival candidates for the driving job, by getting as far as passing the assessment centre, but there's still not a 100% chance you'll end up with an offer (I have no...

End of the line for Paris’ iconic metro ticket

I haven't read everything here but just to say I bought a carnet of billets classiques from the buffet car on Eurostar the weekend before last. Apologies if someone has already mentioned they are still available via there.

    Manchester Airport Ticket Roulette

It's not "£30+", it's about £28, as you have already said. You can save money by getting an Advance ticket for a significantly long time after you're due to land, or try to get a Northern 'on the day' Advance, as has been mentioned. In your position, I would note that we're talking about...

What exactly do you want to know here? You've not really specified anything.

    Eurostar collecting Advance Passenger Information

The difference with the airlines is that there is an outgoing passport check at St Pancras, which is when the info has always been collected. The airlines collect it and provide it to the authorities as there isn't a passport check in the same way, except at the gate for your flight. It ought to...

LNER to pilot removal of Off-Peak tickets

So, have I got this right: -- LNER have claimed that single-leg pricing was a success, but provided no evidence to support this claim -- Walk-up rail travel on those particular journeys has been transported back to 1950, with the added factors that tickets that used to be valid three days are...

Aslef strikes and OT ban called…

One of my thoughts, although I realise I don't have all the detail, is to ask why an individual TOC doesn't just get on and negotiate with the ASLEF people at that TOC, given what you say about a resolution "long ago." Is the answer simply that the DfT have told the TOCs, through RDG, that this...

    Large size Intercity rail tickets

You had an NCR 51 ticket from Milton Keynes and NCR 21 from New Milton. Both were validated by being printed by what was effectively an NCR cash register, although cash wasn't kept in it. NCR 21 printed date, price and a machine number, and all other details were on the printed stock, including...
