This is certainly excellent news.
I must admit, it was disappointing when the reversing Beeching initiative was cancelled, however this gives some confidence that there's still a place for good proposals to go forward.
Now on to Tavistock......
I can understand why its banned - and have never engaged in the practice myself.
However ORR ought to have better things to do than shutting down preserved railways over the actions of misguided individuals.
That's why God invented jumpers.

As a modern day commuter, the 3 seats on some 150's rarely get used, particularly being airline seats. Completely useless configuration.
At least on the VEP's, 308's (which I did commute on) and 333's etc have facing 3 seats.
The VEP's were fine...
I'd be more inclined to consider the system as a whole. It seems fairly pointless to say that one would go to Brighton on the train because it's electric, but not Hull because the train there is a diesel.
In reality, rail travel as a whole would be somewhere between diesel and electric in terms...
I guess the question is whether this will replace the usual weekend blockades during which Tonbridge trains are switched via Maidstone East and visa versa. If it gets rid of the RRB, it could be quite popular. If not, I don't see much benefit for passengers.
When they say a once a month cycle, is that one day or a whole week ?
Going down to 1 train per hour Ashford - Tonbridge for most of the day seems a bit swingeing for any great length of time.
That said the weekend trains always seem busy whenever I'm on them so I can see why they'd want to...
There's only so much demand from the Kent coast. yes, the trains need doubling up lengthwise, but isn't the link already doing what its set out to do domestically.
It's continental destinations that need serving.
The point of the link shouldn't be to reinvigorate the Thames Gateway, except for those travelling Eastwards.
It sounds as though it needs to live up to its potential with more links to the continent.
To be fair, the HAP's had the benefit of plenty of toilets. I can imagine there were some uncomfortably crossed legs on the coastal EPB's !
