Doppelgangers

Has anyone found any doppelgangers? My friend really freaked me out yesterday because he sent me a photo of someone who looked almost identical to me. I asked him where he found the photos and it was Dylan who runs the channel Dylan's Travel Reports. I've seen photos now of him without a mask and he looks less like me now but there's still a strong resemblance.

When I was younger I went to a playground and was minding my business playing with my brother when a boy came up and asked to play with us. He looked exactly like me. Even wearing similar clothes. I was 7 or 8 at the time so I ran away to my mum crying and begged to go home but I still remember it well.

Does anyone else have a story like these?

My dad saw his once years ago. He was in London for work and was going up the escalator at a tube station when coming down the other side was his doppleganger. They both looked at each other as they passed. Must have been so odd.

No, but incredibly coincidentally I had a dream last night which featured a meeting of supposed doppelgangers en masse, but with me as the odd man out so to speak. I don't think I've ever had such a dream before, but I'm not averse to eating cheese late in the evening sometimes!

More pertinent to the question, a friend at work fifty years ago would not believe it wasn't me he saw driving a car once near where he lived, even when I explained I didn't own a car, couldn't drive and had never been to his suburb of London, Luckily for me, no crime where a photofit had been issued bearing a resemblance to me had been issued, but I've been a sceptic about identity parades etc ever since!

There's a professional darts player who looks like me, it's scary when I see him on TV, it's everything about him, face, nose, ears, eyes, expressions, build. It used to freak my dear old dad out, to the point he had to change channels.

On TV a while back, someone saw his doppelganger driving the same car (make/model/colour) as him and wearing the same the clothes, as they passed they did look at each other. He reckons it was some sort of rift in time or something! I'm sure one of them crashed their car, probably on YouTube.

Some years ago I attended a small IT conference at "Chelsea Village". The venue turned out to be the director's box of Chelsea FC. As I was leaving, one of the stadium staff made an oblique reference to what "I" had got up to the previous night. They seemed convinced that I was who they thought I was.

I love electronic music and back in late 90's Florian Schneider, Krartwerk (German electronic band) , looked an awful lot like me and when I see the album cover to The Man Machine, I see myself in the line up. I used to go to lots of electronic type concerts eg Gary Numan etc back in the day and several people have approached me and asked if I was Florian. Uncanny. :D

Peter Mugridge and I spent some time at a station next to the Tilbury line photographing passing 310 EMUs several years ago - on one of the passing trains, he spotted my doppelganger on board!

Years later, I spotted Peter's doppelganger at Lincoln station.

When drinking in the Crown Liquor Saloon in Belfast a few years ago I once had to convince someone that I wasn't Hugh Russell, the famous Northern Ireland boxer of the 1980s, and later boxing photographer. (He sadly passed away in October.) I think my total lack of a Belfast accent was enough to convince him, though.

My father had an identical twin with whom he lost touch for the last 25 years of his life. But when my father was on his death bed my mother contacted the twin and he paid a visit. To see them both together in the circumstances was rather eerie, because, as no-one has mentioned, there is a superstition that seeing your doppelganger is a pressage of death - your body is supposed to be seeing your soul departing (or the other way round).

If that were not enough, the twin came to my father's funeral. Most of the other guests had been unaware he had a twin, so they had a fright.

Also, there is an actress (who mostly does supporting roles in dark films) who when younger was identical to a GF I had years ago. I first saw the actress when I switched on the TV in a hotel room and there happened to be a film with her in it. In the part she was playing even the mannerisms and mode of speech (my GF was a bit dim TBH) were the same. It was weird, especially as the film was a bit spooky anyway, and I watched it transfixed.

There was a guy at my sixth-form who insisted I was a dead-ringer for a young Syd Barrett. I could sort-of see where he was coming from but "dead-ringer" was overselling the resemblance in my opinion.

A weirder one was while I was at uni, and was visiting my then girlfriend at Aberystwyth Uni. One of her house-mates had his girlfriend visiting, and she was the absolute spitting-image of one of my housemates back in Ormskirk!

For several years I was plagued by young ladies screaming hysterically and requesting my autograph, apparently believing I was a thespian of some sort. At that time I had never heard of the name they ascribed to me as it wasn't until much later that my doppelganger, Brad Pit, hit the big time.

...and at one point another person who looks very like me escaped with two other men from Parkhurst on the Isle of Wight. Over the next couple of weeks or so until they were recaptured I had to prove my identity several times...!!!:lol:

I encountered mine about ten years ago, crossing a busy street in the centre of Adelaide, South Australia.

I noticed him first, walking in the opposite direction, and imagine I looked surprised when I suddenly thought "it's me!"

A second or so later he clocked me and definitely looked startled too. We briefly locked eyeballs as we passed each other, then continued on our respective ways never to meet again. We were in the middle of a pedestrian crossing at the time, with the green man flashing - but even if we hadn't been, what else were we both supposed to do? Does anyone ever engage with their doppelganger?

Out in a department store with the family, approximately 20 years ago. My mum took the two little ones, aged 2 and 5, for some cakes in the café, whilst I popped to the WC. On my return, one of them was crying- apparently, they had spotted 'daddy' coming back from the toilet and had both run up to him and jumped on him, as kids do.

But, this was in Hannover, and the guy they jumped onto wasn't me!

They had been shocked by his no doubt bewildered response in German.
Later on, we spotted one another in the same store, similar brown walking boots, jeans, black leather jacket. Same size, same hair, identical features. It was absolutely freaky looking at some stranger from Niedersachsen that could have passed as my twin, to the extent that my bairns even mistook him for me. We exchanged smiles but didn't speak.

I can remember thinking to myself 'I hope that chap isn't a shoplifter' lol

About 2 decades ago, sat in a traffic jam. I looked in the rear view mirror and the guy int he car behind me looked *exactly* like me. It was a bit unnerving.

I've always thought Robbie Williams, Stephen Mulhern and John Hammond the former weather presenter are very similar looking.

In the case of Williams and Hammond, the eyes are totally different imo.

As I get older I start noticing people who look like ones who haven't seen for a decade or two before realising that they don't seem to have aged.

As well you should be! They're one of the least reliable methods of identification out there.

Particularly if the police 'accidentally' give you a 'glimpse' of the suspect.

But in my defence I was 16 at the time and had been persuaded by the police that it would be the 'right thing to do', because the suspect had committed a serious crime (manslaughter/murder) and 'got away with it' - i.e., found Not Guilty in court. in the heat of the moment, I had not remembered clearly what the perpetrator looked like.

Usually, one can dismiss the view of people who think there's corruption in the police because they are involved as the suspect and therefore biased, but my experience was different. It's one of a number of incidents that have left me with a distrust of Authority; a position that often seems to be associated with 'tin-foil hats' and otherwise ridiculed, unfortunately.

When I was younger I looked very like a then-very-famous actor, and i used to get people asking if I am who they think I am quite a lot. Less so 25 years on, thankfully

My ex boss’s dad was unfortunately a doppelgänger for Peter Sutcliffe, and was also a lorry driver at the time of the Ripper. He got stopped quite a few times

On holiday in Spain about fifteen years ago, I set off for a walk kitted up in walking trousers, boots, rucksack, t shirt, hat and sunglasses. About ten minutes after setting off I encountered a bloke coming the other way wearing very similar stuff, including rucksack. He was identical to me except he was twenty or so years younger. We did a double take as we passed and were both shocked by the experience. No way was I speaking to him.

Another time I was watching Crime Watch when someone quite similar to me was shown as wanted for something or another, I wasn't paying too much attention to be honest. A few days later I was in Borehamwood when I noticed a woman eyeing me suspiciously. Ten minutes later I was walking past some shops when a Police car came roaring up and a copper sprang out towards me. He then stopped suddenly, thankfully realising I was not the person he was looking for. Only then did I remember the programme I'd seen earlier.

In a book I recently bought there is an interior shot of Newport West signal box with a group of people posing for the photograph. Astonished,I asked Mrs H if she recognised anybody in the photo. "Apart from you,no." she replied. The photo was dated 1961 many years before i was born.
