Hattons is Closing Down

Just appeared on my Facebook feed. Hattons Model Railways is closing down.

Can't access their Website at the moment - too much traffic.

Gutted. If a big operation like this can't survive, what does it mean for the hobby?

Brief Summary, from the FAQ:
  • The company is NOT insolvent. The company is being wound down in an orderly fashion, leaving no outstanding debts.
  • Changing market conditions have had a large impact on the business, we have seen this in declining customer numbers, changing customer demographics and supply chain disruption.
  • Increased cost of compliance has become a large factor. Brexit, GST and other operational costs of running an international business have all increased dramatically over the past few years.

No pre-orders to be fulfilled, some of the Hattons originals will be completed, others not.

Trunks need to be cleared by 5th Feb, and will be sent out as is on that date.

I've just seen this too. The link for their FAQ page is here: https://hattons.co.uk/closure
It is with immense sadness that we share news of the upcoming closure of Hattons Model Railways, an institution in the hobby since 1946.

Over the decades, we've been privileged to serve enthusiasts and share our passion for model railways with hundreds of thousands of customers.

I've been out of the hobby really for the past couple of years, but this came as a big shock. It does make me wonder if there'll be some changes in the hobby going forward.

Its very sad. I got my first model railway stuff from there. Their shop (the old one) was close to where my Nan lived in Liverpool so i always used to go when we went up there to visit. When i restarted in the hobby 10 years ago Hattons was of course where i bought the bulk of my new railway stuff.

But now gone (soon anyway), its not worth them continuing with the way things are now.

I believe Bachmann stopped supplying them a few years back when they started producing their own models, which was perceived as competition. I can't help thinking not being able to stock one of the two major manufacturers would have been a big drag on the business.

This is a shame, but at least it’s not due to insolvency and it’ll be a relatively orderly winding down.

They had a very easy to use trade in site too, does anyone know if there are any similar alternatives?

Very sad to hear. Their affordable second-hand products helped me get back into the hobby and their website remains one of the easiest to navigate out there. Hopefully everyone involved will be able to find other employment quickly.

I heard about this first on Twitter and I was definitely shocked about this at first, but I'll be brutally honest and say I'm not entirely surprised by this announcement.

The cancellation of the Beilhack Snowploughs & the Plasser 12 ton crane should have been (to be honest) an early sign that things were not going well for Hattons. It's obvious that the increase in price + the low demand forced Hattons to cancel the projects simply because it was not financially viable to move into the later stages of development such as early production & decorated samples.

The Bachmann mallarkey that happened a few years ago now certainly does not help either as it has meant there was way less variety available to choose from and customers clearly chose to go elsewhere where Bachmann models were continued to being stocked.

Regardless, I will miss browsing through the Pre-Owned section of their site, and their Model Directory was a really neat and useful idea!

I got the email today as well. I finally managed to get the FAQ page to load, and Rails are going to fulfil any pre-orders for them, and they're referring local customers to Widnes Models. The closing down sale is rather disappointing though.....either they have been winding down their stocks for some time now, or there's a lot of stock still to be added. Shocking to see one of the big players throwing in the towel though, as others have said.

I am aware it is an orderly closure and not a failure, is it relevant to the future of model railway retailing, that the business is not being sold as a going concern to another party?

Has it been put up for sale though, everyone seems surprised by this.

I suspect the latter - the "up to 35% off MRP" items appear to be slow sellers, rather than site-wide clearance. As the actual closing date isn't yet defined, I suspect we will discover more sale activity in weeks to come.

Personally unsurprised. I, and most people I know, avoided using the Hattons site because it was clunky and most of their stock (especially pre-owned) was overpriced. Failure to innovate and loss of Bachmann must have gradually eroded customer numbers. Glad they didn't go insolvent though, as this implies all is not lost for model retailers.

I found Hattons pre-owned stock to be pricey too, and especially compared with Rails, so I can only assume they had higher than average overheads that have come home to roost as sales have fallen? Losing Bachmann must certainly have been a blow, and would have hit sales hard.

I certainly hope so as it's meagre offerings at the moment!

In N gauge there was a fair bit available initially. Almost everything sold out in the ensuing rush (around when the website was crashing due to high traffic).

I agree with this, the website was too difficult to use so I barely ever did, and their secondhand asking prices for loco’s with bits missing became a meme.

I am sad about the Hattons’s Original’s ranges though. Hopefully someone can take on the Genesis Coach range. I think I have one of those on pre-order still, so I’ll have to look at the website when I can get through to it to see what’s happening there.

Very sad, used to walk to Smithdown Rd shop to spend pocket money, it was an Aladdin’s cave way back then and always busy.
Best wishes to those affected who work there for the future.

I hope someone takes on their rather excellent directory and formation guides etc - a real handy thing for enthusiasts!

The original Hatton's was just down the road from me as a child. My parents had a couple of shops a few hundred yards away at 236-8 Smithdown and there was Hatton's at 180!

I used to go into the original shop quite a lot until I was in my mid teens. Was quite an Aladdin's cave, had many a Christmas and birthday present bought for me there, plus most of my pocket money was spent there too.

However, an odd incident occurred which led to me changing my allegiances model shop wise.

On holiday with my parents to Cornwall and Devon I used to get them to take to me to Peco. On one occasion there was some N gauge accessory from Arnold that I wanted which Peco didn't have in stock but said they could send to my local dealer which was of course Hatton's.

Returning home I told Norman Hatton that Peco would be be sending something through and he told me he would let me know.

Despite repeated requests each time I visited Hatton's the item never appeared.

However, when I visited Peco again I asked what happened. They claimed to have sent it but Mr Hatton sent it back!

Thus after that I switched my support to the now defunct City Models in Liverpool City Centre from where I bought all my future model railway equipment until I gave up active railway modelling in the mid 1990s.

However, I was somewhat shocked to read of the demise of Hatton's it was something of an institution. I had been toying with getting back into model railways now that I have retired and would probably have ended up being a customer once again as their new location at Widnes was not that far away.

Are there any model railway shops on Merseyside now?

Sad news. I recall Hatton's bought up a lot of the stock from fellow Liverpool firm Hornby Dublo when they went under - it was still possible to get new boxed HD track items from them for years after! The Smithdown Road shop was an absolute treasure trove.

I used to have a layout many years ago and after finding a couple of YouTube channels my interest was rekindled. But even though i have a reasonably well paid job the costs involved in setting up the kind of layout i would want are just through the roof once you add in DCC and sound and so on. I predict there will be more fall out than just Hattons.
