British Railways shedcodes (1955): 71A Eastleigh, 71B Bournemouth, 71C Dorchester, 71G Bath, 71H Templecombe, 71I Southampton Docks, 71J Highbridge.

So were 71D to 71F ever used, and if so where?

And if not, why not?

And why was I used as a suffix in 71 (and also 65) but skipped in 6, 51, 84, 86 and 87?

The book I have says 71D was Fratton, 71E Newport Isle of Wight, 71F Ryde Isle of Wight.
Was that pre- or post-1955?

Presumably they were transferred at some point between the Nine Elms District and the Eastleigh District.

EDIT: It appears to have happened between 1953 and 1955.

Hugh Longworth's book of steam loco allocations includes list of shed codes and when they changed. For example:
October 1954
Fratton 71D to 70F (closed in 1959)
Newport (IOW) 71E to 70G
Ryde (IOW) 71F to 70H

February 1958
Bath Green Park 71G to 82F
Templecombe 71H to 82G
Yeovil Pen Mill 82E to 71H
Weymouth 82F to 71G

September 1963
Eastleigh 71A to 70D
Weymouth 71G to 70G
Southampton Docks 71I to 70I

Dorchester 71C closed in 1956
Bournemouth 71B shown as closed in September 1963, but effectively became a subshed of Eastleigh .

Walmsley (Shed by Shed, Part 5) gives 71D as Fratton, 71E as Newport IOW and 71F as Ryde all 8/50-10/54. 71C Dorchester closed in 11/56. 71G Bath Green Park, 71H Templecombe and 71J Highbridge went to the Western Region in 2/58. Weymouth and Yeovil (GW) became 71G and 71H in 2/58 (to 9/63 and 1/59). Southampton Docks was 71I from 8/50-9/63.

Note: the month is the one in which the largest proportion of the four or five week accounting period fell.
