Does anyone know the identities of the two 730s at Gascoigne Wood Selby. Saw them yesterday but was getting dark, I thought they were 23 and 34, but not sure. MTIA

My son, who lives in Kings Langley, got rather confused the first time he caught one of these. The different livery, the "West Midlands Trains" branding and the internal maps, all indicated that he might've been heading for Birmingham...

Who does Walsall to Wolverhampton end-to-end on a train? Track bashers?! They're like a few miles apart as the crow flies!

Well you’re not allowed to change at Tame Bridge

But most would just take the bus or change at Birmingham for/from the Rugeley train (assuming they’re using public transport to get there)

Still waiting for the service via Darlaston and Willenhall to come to fruition

I'm not sure I would want want to be on a 3-car 730 holding 546 passengers (201 seated, 345 standing, ) - 1092 on a 6-car.
The 201 seats also compares to 277 on a 3-car 323 and 270 on a 4-car 350.

But remember that 20% of seats are never actually used as they are the middle seat in a bank of 3 - physically impossible for anyone over about 12 to use this seat if there are two normally sized people sitiing in the other seats!

To be fair, there is not much more room on the 730s, you can get about 1 1/2 people on the two seats, the outer person is basically perched on the edge. I've changed my morning commute to work to avoid them.

No 3+2 seats on the 730s (all of them now).

That's not really true. I sad on the middle seat in a 323 today on the train home, and there were two adults next to me. It wasn't that bad.

Aventras are narrower than 323s (though I admit I haven't measured the actual seats on the latter). 323s are 2.80m wide (very wide for a 23m shell) and have quite thin sidewalls. Aventras are 2.772m wide (so about 3cm narrower) and have sidewalls about twice the thickness of a 323, so the internal width is probably about 6-7cm narrower. This doesn't sound a lot, but a couple of centimetres on each seat (or the aisle) is significant when they're quite narrow.

The seat used in most Aventras so far is 43.5cm wide as against 45cm on the 350/2 (where it's borderline-acceptable-ish). This makes it not dissimilar to those schoolkid road coaches which aren't suitable for adults at all.

It's quite noteworthy that Aventras are all the same width - the 20m ones don't have a wider body unlike almost every other unit platform the UK has ever seen.

The other issue with busy Cross City trains is that when it is standing room only people just congregate by the doors rather than standing down the aisles. Hopefully with wider aisles and a 1+1 layout by the doors people will be incentivised to move down the carriage and create less of a faff when people need to get off the train.

43.5cm as a seat width is shocking - whoever agreed this specification needs to leave the rail industry forthwith!

I found a really interesting RSSB study from 2019 - "Defining the requirements of a seat comfort selection process". It an interesting read and its conclusions include the following;

"The TSI (Technical Standards for Interoperability) specifies a seat width of 450mm or greater. The minimum comfort requirement for seat width (distance between arms) is 460mm to fit a 95th percentile female hip breadth sitting. The overall seat width to fit the 95th percentile male shoulder width is 525mm. We therefore recommend the results of this project are presented to the TSI technical committee to understand if the TSI seat width dimensions need to be reviewed."

The report also includes a proposed test for measuring seat comfort, which suggests that the minimum width to for an acceptable score is 46cm.

You can read a really interesting article about the study without needing to register via this link

Why on earth don't people specifying these new trains use the industry's own research? It beggars belief...

Looking at the seat design, the 3 car seats are from the exact same supplier as the 5 car, however that's not to say the three armrests put a little extra space between the two. Not sure of the width on the 5 cars, but wouldn't be surprised if they are all from the same batch. I just hope the 43.5 'local seat' width isn't making it's way onto long distance services. There's been a promise that these seats are suitable for regional / intercity work, this remains to be seen.

If indeed the 5-car sets are also 43.5 - the publicity could be a grim day for Alstom.

The 730s were ordered in 2017, 2 years prior to the study.

It’s been stated elsewhere in this thread that the 5 car sets use the long distance, wider, version of the seat, with more padding.
