Heart of Wales - Llanelli to Llandovery

Having a day off work today and it being reasonably nice weather compared to the past few days I decided to have a day out on the TFW network. it was a toss up between riding a 197 to Haverfordwest/Milford or a trip on the Heart of Wales Line which I have neglected since at least December 2019! In the end the Heart of Wales won, so i decided to take a ride to Llandovery, somewhere ive not visited before, only passed through on the HOWL.

My journey started with the 0745 ex Cardiff to Milford service which called at my local Swanline station, which today was 197012. I rode this as far as Llanelli where i changed for the HOWL service. The acceleration on the 197 from Swansea was excellent and it arrived in Llanelli a good 3 minutes early. Only the second time ive been on a 197 West of Swansea. The 0931 Llanelli to Shrewsbury today was a single 153 (153312), id say it was no more than a third full the entire way to Llandovery. It called at all request stops apart from Bynea and Llangenneth It was on time leaving Llanelli, but did lose a bit of time at Pantyfynnon so arrived in Llandovery around 10 mins late. I decided to get the next train back at 1128 (which was also about 10 mins as the services cross at Llanwrtyd) Surprisingly I crammed a lot into about 45 minutes, a look around Llandovery which is lovely plus a drink and snack. Im not sure there would be enough to spend more than a couple of hours there though as the next train after the 1128 wasnt due until 1407. In the past ive stopped off at Llanwrtyd and spent an hour there as back in the day the lunchtime service from Swansea allowed just over an hour there. There was a bit more to do and aee in Llandovery but even having less than an hour there i didnt feel rushed like I thought i would be. Id love to go to Sugar Loaf sometime, Knighton is also on my list but thats a lot more further North.

The return journey was also a single 153 (153323), again about a third full but picked up quite a few passengers particularly at Ammanford, id say it was well over half full on arrival at Llanelli where i alighted. All request stops were called at apart from Bynea. A good proportion of passengers today seemed to be using their bus passes for free travel (available between October and March I believe)

I got chatting to a very lovely guard on the train.... I heard her mention the HOWL rail card so I decided to ask her about it. Apparently its £13 a year and you get a 1/3 off all fares. I then asked her about my favourite Transport for Wales topic the 197s! Apparently the drivers like them, the guards are not so keen. They preferred the 175s as they were easier to work. She also told me that its the first time in a while she has worked a single 153 on the HOWL - they are usually pairs of 153s with the odd 150.

Anyone able to advise whether the HOWL is actually booked as single 153s or pairs now? I thought it was single 153s still and seeing 2 on there today supports that. Today a single 153 coped with demand but seeing how many passengers got on at Ammanford for Llanelli/Swansea a second carriage would be beneficial.

Anyway, a very enjoyable journey and morning/afternoon, I do love the HOWL, ive been put off in recent years due to the unreliable service/many cancellations

In September 2023, from Llanelli to Shrewsbury, I had two-car railcar 150267 according to my notes, but I can't answer your question as I'm not a local.

Most of the time over the last few years I have used the line its been a single 153 , including a couple of weeks ago. I would add that I usually use 09:39 from Bucknell down to LLanelli if it makes a difference

Thank you for your reply. Yes 150s do seem to be quite common still on the HOWL

Ironically I have never actually had a 150 on the HOWL line myself, probably done around 10-12 journeys over the last 12 years so not a massive amount of journeys, some end to end, some shorter trips to Llanwrtyd. But its always been a single 153 whenever ive gone, possibly a pair of 153s on one occasion.

I have to admit i prefer much prefer a 153 over a 150 but it would be good to ride one on the HOWL before they go!

Yes a single 153 is what i thought was still booked for this line too. I was surprised when the guard told me it was mostly double 153s. I suppose with far less 153s now needed to cover long distance services on the marches if they are available they double them up where possible.

Thanks for the report. Very interesting.
We caught this train back in early November and it was a 150. i'd say the two-car was about 1/3 full.
I think we came back Llanwytrd - Llandovery, Llandovery - Gowerton on single 153s.
As you noted, significantly more passengers from about Ammanford.

What are the rules about 153s? I thought that they were non-compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act and not allowed unless in combination with units that are DDA compliant.

I believe the non DDA ones are the 153/9s which is why they're booked attached to a 153/0 as shown in post #6

Thanks. What did you think of Llandovery and Llanwytyd? I liked them both, preferred Llandovery as a bit more to see there.

Id say the single 153 was about a third full at Llandovery and then picked up passengers at Llandeilo plus a few at the request stops and particularly Ammanford It was around 2/3 full after Ammanford. A lot alighted at Llanelli.

A lovely scenic rural line and im pleased the service has improved with 5 full workings and 2 short workings at each end per day.

Well, two of us were only at Llanwyrtd for 15 minutes (the southbound train being a few mins late), so I can't say. But one of us failed to get on the train (old age brain f*rt, I suppose) and he thus lunched in the village and liked it.

Myself and former uni friend B wandered into Llandovery and had a leisurely lunch in a friendly pub. I mean, it wasn't Victoria Falls or the Pyramids - but nice enough to be with a friend to chat to.

I sincerely think that with a new loop installed at Pantyffynon, the southern end of the line could be significantly developed, especially if some (eg 4 tpd) trains were routed via the Swansea District line to Cardiff rather than Swansea. It won't happen though, certainly in the current UK financial climate-cum car culture. But that is for the speculative department.

Yes both Llanwrtyd and Llandovery are nice enough to spend a few hours for lunch, neither overly exciting places but nice for some peace and quiet and lovely views on the HOWL.

I agree there is definately a market for the lower end of the line certainly from Ammanford to Llanelli/Swansea.

Bynea i notice very rarely gets used as a request stop, one of the few ive never seen the train call at on my journeys. I suppose being so close to Llanelli and having such an infrequent service doesnt help. People most likely to get a bus if going to Llanelli id imagine.

A few years ago I did a trip on the HOWL from the other direction for a day out from Shrewsbury. I didn’t quite do the whole length of the line as I wanted somewhere nice to have a wander around before returning. I spent just over 2 hours in Llandeilo which I found to be a very pleasant place. That was about enough time to have good look around the town, go in a tearoom to get something to eat, and then walk down the hill to the station at Ffairfach to get the train back. Thanks for the tips that Llanwrtyd and Llandovery are also nice places to spend a couple of hours.

I have done the entire line a few times, occasionally on a trip to/from Manchester ive done it via the HOWL.

Ive heard Knighton is also very nice but not been there myself.

It is a lovely line, although I've only ever done it on railtours. Always amusing when we have to wait at a station for the service train to pass and, because of the length of the train, we're blocking a level crossing for a while. One time I did it we had a stop at Llandovery to meet Huw Edwards, who was there to give a speech and unveil a plaque. The only issue with the line is how overgrown the foliage is. On some parts of the line, all you see is tree branches until you go over a viaduct and get a brief glimpse of countryside, then back to tree branches again. In fact, one branch actually smashed a vestibule window at one point. Luckily no one was standing there!

Knighton was certainly a very nice town when I last visited, although it was over 40 years ago! It is right on the border of England and Wales with a small part of the town, including the station being in England, but the main town centre is just over the border in Wales.

Just flicked through my copy of Britains Least Used Stations. Bynea came in at number 80, several of the HoWL stations have less traffic!

My memory of Llandeilo is taking a replacement bus down there middle of January last year. Main road had been gritted but the road to the station car park hadn't. The fresh ice was cracking underneath the wheels and it was the first time I experienced turning the steering wheel only for the bus to keep going straight. Had a (little) bit more luck with the brakes, as the ABS went into overdrive. Driving back out of there, keeping the back of the bus straight required more attention than what was going on at the front! Truthfully just letting it drive at idle revs and keeping speed to less than walking pace was sufficient to keep control of it. The minibus that accompanied me declared he wasn't going into some of the stations like Cynghordy which are situated at the bottom of a hill, couldn't blame him!

Thoroughly beautiful park of the UK!
