It the Northern Line from Totteridge and Whetstone. Whereabouts in London are you actually trying to get to?

A good location for the sights
The northern line will take you to Leicester Square and Charing Cross which are both great central locations to start off a day of sightseeing - you can just tap in and out with a contactless bank card to pay for it.
Just ensure that you take a tube going via Charing Cross, and not one going via Bank.
I would recommend picking up a tube map at whatever tube station you first go in to use to plan your routes, and using an app for maps (I like google maps) is very useful with their journey planner.
Finally, if you ever get confused, just find a member of staff and ask them for help, almost all staff are friendly people who are more than happy to advise.

That's great and that direct to charing Cross? Also if you keep hopping on and off the tube is there a maximum you will pay for the day? Or does it not work like that?

Yeah it goes direct to charing cross, as long as it says via charing cross - half of them take a different route, but you shouldn't have to wait more than about 5 mins for a charing cross one.
And yeah, if you use the tube a lot you'll reach a cap and you won't be charged any more than that, and this cap also covers travel on buses and national rail inside London. Essentially just use the same contactless card for every mode of transport you do and you'll pay the cheapest fare - although just to note each person you're with will have to have a separate contactless card to use. If you're with kids, then they may be able to travel free with you, or you can get them a kids oyster card which offers discounted or free travel depending on age.

My son is four. I will have my inlaws with me and they won't have contactless. So what's the option for them?

I believe a 4-year-old you can take with you for free.
For your in-laws, if this is just a one-off trip, you should be able to purchase a zones 1-4 travelcard from a ticket machine or ticket office at Totteridge and Whetstone for them, which gives unlimited travel for a day in zones 1 to 4 - Totteridge and whetstone is zone 4, and the centre is mainly zone 1, so this should cover all of your journeys unless you wish to travel further out. If you're travelling on a weekday between 06:30-09:30 or 16:00-19:00, you'll need a peak travelcard, if you don't travel in those times then an off-peak travelcard will suffice.
If they are going to be travelling fairly frequently, it may be worth buying them an oyster card which can be done at a ticket machine, which works in the same way as a contactless card except it has a balance on it that can be topped up at the ticket machines and it gives access to the cheaper fares, but requires a £10 initial payment to get the card.

Off peak Travelcards only have a morning peak restriction.

That's great so we arrive on good Friday late so we won't be using the tube as I think we will get an uber to the hotel. We will go into London Saturday Sunday and Monday and on one of those days we will go on the hop on hop off sight seeing tour so I think for my wife and I we can just tap are cards and for my in laws just get them of peak travel cards. On the day of the hop on hop off they won't need a travelling card right?

Yeah the sightseeing tour buses use their own ticketing system so you won't need a travel card for that, other travel on that day will need a travel card however if you do take any tubes on that day.
As that is easter weekend, the monday is a bank holiday so off peak travel all day, so off peak travelcard will suffice for travel on all three of those days at any time.

you can also purchase a single for the tube, but those are pretty expensive.
I think overall it will work out cheapest to purchase them a couple of visitor oyster cards: https://tfl.gov.uk/travel-information/visiting-london/visitor-oyster-card#on-this-page-1
This only costs £5 up front and allows them to tap in and out which is much simpler than using travelcards.
Note it must be bought before you get to London and delivered to them by post, else you have to buy a normal oyster card which costs £10 up front rather than £5

From Totteridge & Whetstone it is currently £11.70 for travel within zones 1 to 4.

A paper single from Totteridge & Whetstone to central London is currently £6.70, compared with £3.20 using contactless or Oyster - this makes it easy to see a benefit in spending £5 obtaining a visitor Oyster card.

Yes, it is.
That's great I think I made the right choice in accomadation. Travel lodge in or around Central London was £1394 for two rooms for four nights or whetstone £527 for two rooms for four nights. I was on trip adviser and people said I made the wrong choice. Maybe I could have got closer again for around the same price but this suits me.

If anything, going further out would have been a better deal - you could have got two doubles in a Premier Inn close to Luton Airport Parkway for £400, and day Travelcards each day for £13.30 each with a Groupsave discount. However, you're committed now so that's not much help for this time. Seeing as you are travelling every day while you are in London, if you are prepared to pay for your travel in advance, and can collect the tickets from a National Rail station* you could buy 4 Travelcards for each day from Potters Bar to Zones 1-6, with a Groupsave discount, and these will work out cheaper all round as the current price is just £10.00 each (it goes up at the weekend).

*You wouldn't be able to buy these at, or collect them from, Totteridge & Whetstone.
