Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket

I'm planning to do some travelling in rural Germany and Denmark in May.

Because there's two of us travelling together I've looked at the Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket for the German leg which allows travel on regional trains throughout Germany (but not IC or ICE) for €46 a day. This seems much cheaper than an inter-rail ticket if we travel for 7 days.

Has anyone used these yet? Would single regional tickets be cheaper? Can they be used on the Harz system?

Any advice gratefully received!

Depends where you're going. If you're planning to travel more than 2 days, get a Deutschlandticket. If you order using the HVV Switch app, the first month is calculated pro rata. If you order AND cancel before the 10th, then you only pay the partial month.
Can they be used on the Harz system?
You mean the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen? QDL no, Deutschlandticket yes, except for Drei Annen Hohne - Brocken.

Isn't there a Mo.-Fr. a.m. time restriction on this ticket?

There is. I'm not sure why DB don't mention this on their information page. I had to go look in the Annex of the Deutschlandtarif, which I'm sure the typical user won't do.
Also the price for 2 persons is €55, so already from 2 days, a Deutschlandticket will be cheaper.

The link you provide has within it a link to the official terms and conditions which make it clear (in German) - after 9 on weekdays, any time weekends and public holidays. From what I remember, the time restriction used to be very clearly printed on paper tickets.
Thank you, yes, 3.2.1 says this, the section 5.1 is an exception for the Christmas period isn’t it, so irrelevant to this discussion…… (https://deutschlandtarifverbund.de/...12/231201_D_6_TBDT_Aktionsang_Tageskarten.pdf)
3.2.1 Ein Tageskartenangebot gilt an dem auf der Fahrkarte angegebenen Geltungstag für beliebig viele Fahrten in den Nahverkehrszügen im jeweiligen räumlichen Geltungsbereich des Angebots, und zwar
◼ an Werktagen ab 09:00 Uhr bis 03:00 Uhr des Folgetages;
Google suggests:
3.2.1 A day ticket offer is valid on the day of validity indicated on the ticket for any number of journeys on local trains in the respective geographical area of validity of the offer, namely: ◼ on weekdays from 09:00 a.m. to 03:00 a.m. the following day; If the first journey is to be started between 00:00 and 03:00 on the following day, the ticket must be purchased before the start of the following day. ◼ on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays* from 00:00 to 03:00 the following day. * The exact holiday regulations can be found in the list of offers according to Appendix 1.
That’s actually pretty good for a computer translation!

Is it possible to get a Deutschland ticket without an address in Germany and a European bank account? Clearly a month's travel for €49 is better value. I understand I'd have to cancel by 10th May to avoid getting the June ticket as well, but if I cancelled it before I travelled would the "May" ticket still be valid?

Sure. You can do it in the HVV app (I had to use PayPal though - it didn't like any of my UK cards).

When I bought one I cancelled it immediately and the validity remained.

It tries to do an automatic credit check in the background but seems to fail for non-German addresses. The error message should contain an e-mail address and when I mailed them, they apparently ran a manual check and then I could use my Belgian credit card. Just bought a 2-day ticket for €3.27.

I've just tried via HVV app and it doesn't like my UK credit card. I tried several cards but it would have none of it. I registered a card with PayPal and that's worked. I bought a card starting 1st May, so it's big QR code is visible on the app but not valid yet. Thanks for the advice folks.

If it helps, Seat61 recommends using the VBN FahrPlan app (transport authority for the Bremen area). Relevant extract from his page on German train travel below.

The easiest way for foreign visitors to buy a Deutschland ticket is to buy from Bremen area transit authority VBN using their FahrPlaner app because (a) it accepts payment by credit card, (b) it's in English, and (c) it has no problem with overseas users, overseas addresses or UK postcodes. #result!

Step 1, download the FahrPlaner app for iPhone or MFahrPlaner app for Android (please let me know if those links stop working).

Step 2, the app should open in English. Click the menu icon top left and go to Tickets. Then select Deutschlandticket.

Step 3, click the red PROCEED TO LOGIN button at the bottom. Then click Sign up for free and register, it lists most countries including United Kingdom and United States and has no problem with UK postcodes.

Step 4, select Credit Card and buy your Deutschland ticket.

This is a rolling subscription which you can cancel at any time.

You show the Deutschland Ticket as a QR code in the app on your phone. Easy!

If you only want one Deutschland ticket for one month, buy it before the 10th of the month then cancel your subscription also before the 10th of the month. That prevents payment being taken for the following month.

To cancel the subscription, you must open the order confirmation email they sent you when you bought it and click on the cancellation link. You cannot cancel your subscription from the app.

My UK credit card worked fine for HHV in November. Mastercard - don’t know if that made a difference.

Thanks for that, I've got to get one for my partner so will try that app for her!!

Tried a MasterCard with HVV but no good, so went for PayPal in the end. No issues with PayPal except a few years ago I kept getting fake emails purporting to be from them which put me off them for a while....

Strange - maybe the fact that I used to be a German resident means that I can be credit verified over there, though how that would work with a GB credit card I don’t know. The Germans won’t know that my name is probably unique…

The question for me is how you’re getting around Denmark if not Interrail?!
Probably just buy point to point tickets for those journeys, but will investigate any regional day passes. Still not ruling out interrail global pass, but the €49 German ticket means we don't use up valuable interrail days on local services. So we won't need a continuous pass.

You can buy a day ticket for around £17 that'll get you on all Arriva trains in Denmark and across the border to Niebüll - link. I've bought one before by just using Google to translate the site - it's an eTicket to show on your phone (or print if you want).

Snippet below in English:

Arriva OneDay is your train ticket if you want to travel over 24 hours for DKK 149 and travel unlimitedly on all Arriva's trains.

Travel both out and home on the same day with Arriva OneDay

For just DKK 149 you get a day ticket, which is valid for free travel on all Arriva trains. If you buy your OneDay ticket in good time, you can save money on your train journey - the earlier you buy the ticket, the cheaper it is.

Let the experiences start on the train

Arriva OneDay is your ticket to exciting experiences for the whole family. And did you know that an adult can take two children under the age of 12 for free on the day ticket?
With Arriva OneDay you don't have to worry about return tickets and arrival stations. Hop on and off as you please for 24 hours.
So take your family by the hand, hop on the train and easily get around to life's big and small experiences – with Arriva OneDay, the experiences already start on the train!

Advantages of Arriva OneDay

  • Travel freely for only DKK 149 on all Arriva trains .
  • An adult can include two children under the age of 12 on the ticket free of charge. A paying child can take a child under 12 free of charge.
  • Children up to and including 15 years of age get a 50% discount compared to the adult ticket price when buying Arriva OneDay.
  • Unlimited travel on all Arriva trains for over 24 hours. The day ticket is valid from 00:00 on the date shown on the ticket until 04:00 on the following date.
Please note that the ticket is offered for sale on selected days and in limited numbers.
Arriva OneDay is also valid on the Tønder - Niebüll route.

Thanks, I'll definitely investigate this. Looks like I might only need a global interrail card to cover the out and back journeys from UK, as these one day tickets are far cheaper than adding more days to an interrail card!

HVV-can be paid as Ausländer=foreigner only via PayPal (as I understand)
I currently have a DE-ticket for MArch via the ARRIVA glimble app-but select the DE-ticket one (there are also locals and ARV is quite big in UK): can be ordered only for 49€ for a full month and must be cancelled before day 10 for next month, but ORder can do till 2 days before(so 28th or 29th) and payment is via cr.cd (MY VISA was taken without any hiccup).
2 notes: It only accepts DE=german Postal codes=5 figures. So thats hard for you Brits. My dutch one was easier to adapt.
AND-as I found out only with help by a very friendly helpful conductor: it may be needed to log out +In again any new day. The QRcode it produces seem to be new every day. In bus/tram you just show that code (if there is a ticket check at all). Its for me also new-last yr I had it on a plastic chipcard.
Hint beside for Brits longing for some asathome standard: Premier HTLs has also arrived in DE and is quite good. Has a special site, some are also on booking. Tomorrow have reserved one in FRankfurt.
DENmark-in SUmmer (is a bit earlier there as Brits are used to-starts usually from 21/6=longest day) the last yrs has a 7-day all-transit pass (Sommarbillett or the like) for a very low price. So if you plan to go in that time-check it out! (As I just also posted onanother thread on passes &etc)

Because the €49 Deutschland Ticket is valid for a month, whereas the €46 QDL ticket is only for a day, are there still any benefits to the latter compared to the former?

Only that you don't have to set up an account and then cancel the sub?

It's 82 euros for 5 people. Now it might still be cheaper to use the subscription ticket if you can work out the pro-rata refund thing, but for some people having a physical ticket is a benefit (and for a subset of those people, being able to pay in cash is also a benefit).
