As a born and bred Northerner I had to do a double take a couple of years ago when I suddenly noticed a Greggs had popped up at London Kings Cross :D

Pret seem to have the bigger monopoly 'down south' although I must admit I've never tried one!
Pret were good when they had just a handful of shops. I haven't been in one for years for the reasons stated above.

Greggs breakfast offerings are still very generously filled (up North at least) in my experience, their daytime sandwiches much less so in recent times so best avoided and go for the spicy wedges.

On a very loose connection - the Greggs outside Piccadilly was shut today. Shutters down, no notices though. Does anyone know if this is a refurb?

You’d think they’d put prominent notices up as the other half of me thinks do they have a pest problem!
That caught me too. Turned up clutching my Christmas present gift card, drooling for a steak slice and, as you say, shutters up. Extra annoying that I had passed two Greggs as I walked up Market Street.

Wondering if this Greggs is closed today.

Apparently Greggs tills are down nationwide.

Twitter posts about stores being closed or cash only across London, Cardiff, Manchester and I can confirm at least one Birmingham branch closed too (the one I visited)!

Just managed to get a coffee (paying by card) at one of the branches in Newcastle city centre, so clearly some are managing.

If it's an SSP franchise then I'm surprised it's so busy as they are more expensive than the regular Greggs and even the regular Greggs is getting a bit pricey these days especially given the quality or lack thereof, honestly can we not have local good quality outlets at stations anymore instead of endless branded outlets and large chains serving mass produced crap at highly controversial prices? My same complaint applies to motorway services and goodness only knows how many other outlets and locations
I disagree to an extent.

The London and Northwestern Wetherspoons at New St Station in Birmingham, is no more expensive than the other Wetherspoons in Birmingham City Centre. I also think it is a welcome addition to New St Station. It is also a nice modern style branch, akin to The Barrel Vault at St Pancras.

Greggs at Oxford Station is more expensive than the Greggs in Oxford's Cornmarket. Recall a bake and coffee is £4.50, with a coffee being £2.50. Again, I think the Station branch is a SSP outlet.
