Greater Anglia to install tables on its Stansted Express trains

The 3-bay seat in 3+2 seating gives you more seat space to sit your luggage on. While the bay of two seats is quite narrow and rarely will someone attempt to sit next to you unless train full and standing.
I suppose that's true, like the 745/1 are more luxurious as you can rest your feet on the seat opposite without a table in the way..

I wouldn't go that far. But people do like to stand suitcases in the window bays on 745s where the tables are yet to be fitted.

I would re phrase that to making the best of a bad job.. apart from the expense they can't do without a single unit in the fleet, this is storing up problems as the fleet age as well.

Interested in another 5 to 10 years when they'll need a refurb how that would be achieved and if as predicted passenger numbers increase, the service will become less reliable
Oh, I'm sure they can always hire a rake of Mk2s top and tailed with a couple of 37s to allow sets to be removed for refurb!

Having read this thread, I think GA have done very well out of the stock replacement process. Compare it to EMR’s non-IC situation: replacement stock which is mid-life and unloved from its previous TOCs (GA, I’m looking at you in terms of the 360s and 156/9s!) and it has taken over 4.5 years to hear that a refurbishment programme has been signed off. And a half-arsed programme at that. The problems that have dogged the Regional operation in particular have been horrific and a world away from GA.

The FLIRTs are very good trains indeed and, echoing a previous post, the 720s are a huge improvement on the stock they replaced. Tables for the Stansted Express are another step up on quality; however I would question whether they are actually needed given that its trains serve as an airport express service. Nevertheless, I suppose that it would be a beneficial thing if the aim is to standardise them as much as possible to the IC 745s.

They wouldn't be needed if the /1s were just on airport runs, but at the moment it's anything goes. It still doesnt solve their 1st class and buffet problem, or the 3x755 diagram(s).

They are great trains though, very comfortable and 100x better than the life expired junk they replaced.

Cheapest way of delaying solving the issue of a shortage of rolling stock on the intercity line.

The 360's were GA's best units until the 745's arrived. Sadly at that point they stopped receiving any TLC apart from essential maintenance. I used them to commute regularly from the time they were introduced in 2004 and was very impressed with them. it was a shame that they were the first units to leave GA. EMR were very unlucky to receive them during COVID which clearly delayed any refurbishment.

The 720s are definitely not an improvement on the excellent 379s. They were excellent trains and very new.

Agreed regarding the 379s - I was getting more at 317s and 321s.

Wish we could have had some of the 379s for the Connect service; but the 360s finally seem to be coming good after the various teething problems with their introduction and EMR’s lack of electric traction experience pre-360.
