“Better than average” Wetherspoons

I can only suggest that you must have visited quite a limited selection! There have been a number of different "house styles" over the years from mahogany and dark blue in the 1990s to light wood and pastel colours a few years later. Some have heavy wooden furniture, other light metal frame items. Seating varies between booths, low tables, and high tables with stools. And of course, famously each pub has its own bespoke carpet design.

The ones I visit keep any screens either very low-key or off, so they certainly aren't intrusive other than occasionally during big sports events. That and the absence of piped or jukebox music is a big plus for me.

I must say that those I visit* appear much the same inside, even if the buildings they wre in are very different.

*to deposit liquid, rather than withdraw.

Yes....that's what I use them for too!
I must say I find that a little disrespectful to the business.

It’s like for example, going into a High Street shop, examining a product, asking advice from the retailer, then walking out and purchasing it online.

I was under the impression that Wetherspoons made a decision a couple of years ago to allow the public to use their toilets during opening hours.

If that is correct then I apologise. Would be nice to occasionally buy a coffee or something though :)

When I last did it - at the 'Admiral of the Humber' in Hull - I spotted a rather tempting locally-brewed Great Newsome stout on the bar en route back from the Gents....so I had a pint. Of course, after that, I needed to use the toilet again!

They have their place but they’re not as good as a local pub with its regulars. In Spoons I tend to have this cloak of invisibility when I’m stood at the bar waiting to get served. I’ve been at a bar for ages being ignored by the staff who are busy sorting out app orders by those who can’t be arsed bothered to go to the bar to order drinks like they would in a proper pub.
I'll take ordering on the app any day. No need for me to leave whoever I'm with to stand like a lemon at bar, or, if I'm alone and with my things, no need to leave my table/perch and leave my stuff unattended.

Out of interest, if you order via the app do you get the full choice of changing beers or do you just get Wetherspoons ‘standard’ beers?

You get everything on the menu, which means you can browse without occupying a stand at the bar - and there is no social barrier to trying something new either.

So in any particular Wetherspoons, as the ever changing guest beers run out and are replaced with different beers, is the app updated in real time? If so I’m wondering who does it?
They are updated in real time and in my experience I have only ever had the app once try to sell me something which was no longer available. I'm pretty sure the management can set the inventory in real time.

In theory yes, but I have also had someone come to my table to inform me something just ran out and ask what alternative would I like.

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
As have I, and in fact the last time it happened somewhat laughably it was orange juice that breakfast time. Where I find the app is deficient is when they have specials on the food menu or region specific menu items that either have not or cannot be input into the system

5 years in the good beer guide and 10 ales on most of the time, but somehow The Sir Norman Rae (Shipley) are calling last orders for the final time. Going to really miss this place.

My most memorable Wetherspoons for distinctiveness are:
The Corryvreckan - Oban
The Old Chapel - Darwen
The Royal Hop Pole - Tewkesbury

On a recent trip to the Wetherspoon's in the area, The Old Chapel really stood out. It also was the closest I've seen to a similarly lovely building, the former Wetherspoon's in Bodmin which was sadly closed. Visiting the various Wetherspoon's pubs has slightly turned from a hobby to an obsession in recent years, having now had a drink in 593 of them! If only, Workington and Ipswich hadn't been closed on the days we visited, there would be a couple more!

Then the answer is, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em - by downloading and using the app.

One of the worst things in a busy pub is to have to jostle at the bar, hoping the staff will see in what order the punters should be served (which many don't) and then have to make your way back to your table, losing half your beer as you nudge your way through the throng. This is especially advantageous for ladies. I'm not being sexist but most who I know are reluctant to use "proper" pubs because they don't like the idea of having to elbow their way between drinkers propping up the bar who seem to give scant regard for the fact that it is where people get served.

There is simply no reason not to use the app. It works well, it's easy to use and it saves all that palaver. I've used it since its very early days (when it was far more basic, could not cope with "guest" ales or changing chips for a jacket potato and many of the other food options). IMHO one of the biggest drawbacks of "proper" pubs is no table service. I don't know how they have got away with it all these years. Life has moved on a bit since standing at the bar for hours was all we knew.

I went in there some years ago. Although I found it very nice, cosy with many small alcoves, I did think it was a bit dark. Needed better and brighter lighting. Some may like it like that but I like to see who I’m talking to, what I’m drinking and what I’m eating. Note, this was not a complaint, more of an observation.

As part of my trip to Blackpool we travelled on the Tram for a guided tour of Fleetwood. We visited the Wetherspoons, apart from one man who decided that he wanted to be a Billy No Mates and visit another Pub in the Good Pub Guide. I said you can see why I am now a former CAMRA member and nearly Teetotal.

He did the same thing again at another location. Although a lot of us were not drinking.

Had to Google Teetotal & still none the wiser

I mentioned a few weeks ago about having visited 593 Wetherspoon's. It's a figure which is now up to 597. I've got a trip planned to Glasgow later this month and am wondering if, as per the title of this thread, does anyone have a personal recommendation of a 'better than average Wetherspoon's' which might be good for the milestone 600th Wetherspoon's visit? I've visited the central Glasgow ones previously so I'm thinking more of the surrounding Glasgow area, not too difficult for public transport from central Glasgow. I can see pubs in places like Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Kirkintilloch, for example and wondered about those. If anyone has any personal knowledge, it would be appreciated.

The Counting House Glasgow. An impressive former bank.

Blimey, saw that about 5 years ago - I didnt go in as I was driving. It looked very grand though.

Had the comfiest chairs I've ever witnessed at a Spoons.

I was totally unimpressed by the one in Greenock. Admittedly I haven't been since before lockdown....but on my last visit they didn't even have any cask ales on sale.
